I just got a Relix mag that has a kind of review of the music released to date from the Europe tour. It made the one sentence statement that is the nature of the topic... the record was heavily overdubbed.

Now I recently heard that about Little Feat's "Waiting for Columbus" and I could believe that with all the horns and such, but never thought that of the Dead's publications. Not including Anthem of the Sun, which was a specific experiment with mixing studio and live performance.

Anyone heard of this? Am I just out of the loop (for the last 30 years or so)?

Interested in any info.

Thanks,

Dave

I don't know how much, but I know they did some. I believe I've read somewhere that they minimized Donna in the mix...don't blame 'em there. I also know that on the "Without A Net" release they did some over dubs.

I believe they overdubbed Merle saunders playing organ parts. you can hear it too-- listen to He's gone. Those don't sound like pigpen riffs.

Many people hold the version of China/Rider from Europe '72 as the best vesion but one does have to take those overdubs into account. I think it's an outstanding version but always sounded "too good" if ya know what I mean...almost too perfect. My favorite vesion is 6-26-74. DP12.

wait people say thats the best version ever?! give me a break. yeah europe 72 sounds like a studio album

Europe 72 was overdubbed, especially with the vocals. In fact, during that tour (Tivoli TV show) Bobby sang the "I just jumped the watchman" part in Jack Straw but you hear Jerry sing that part on the album.

9-11-73 china rider blows that europe 72 one out of the water. Im not a big fan of that one myself

I like almost every china/rider I've heard better than the europe 72 rendition. Even the ones from the late eighties early nineties. Yeah Europe 72 pretty much is a studio album. Donna is way down in the mix (like someone else said might be a good thing), harmonies perfect, guitars at perfect levels, it fades out of he's gone, ect. ect. It sounds way too good. Puts me to sleep. Like may 77 shows, just too good for my liking. I have to admit it is a good tool for getting people into the dead. Becuase it's live but also accessable to the avarage radio/sudio song listener.

anyway the album maybe overdubbed but if one listens to the original sbd recordings they're still some fucking amazing preformances....i'd take a 72 over the entire 80s anyday

The China Cat Sunflower from europe 72 is what got me into the Dead. This was before i even knew that it should be paired with IKYR... i had downloaded it from napster or something wayyy back in the day. it was mislabeled as being performed by GD & Phish.

in any case, I was blown away... i've heard better versions since then but that was the first time i heard psychedelic music... it was rainbow of sound...

ahhh the memories

Since we're already off-topic, did Phish ever cover Dead-tunes
or tunes that the Dead themselves covered?
