DSO also does a wonderful job of this (and it was only $40 for TWO nights a couple of months ago when they came through Portland). Obviously the Grateful Dead were the masters of their own songs(and the many they covered), but is this to say no one else should even attempt to bring out the magic that lives within these songs? Should Jerry have never covered anybody else's songs either? All the musicians in the world should just put down their instruments and quit playing, for they can never measure up? There are some really great musicians out there man, and I have heard many great covers of Dead tunes. Open up your ears and give them a chance. You might be surprised.....

I'd say yeah Elvis impersonators are basically doing the same type of thing, although (from my own biased perspective) the entire GD group dynamic seems much more complex and nuanced and harder to achieve... I have no doubt that a truly awesome Elvis act would be a monumental achievement as well, with all the monster players he had. And my band charges $6 or 7...
