all the clips of him at the Sweetwater w/ Jerry have been taken down :( fucking bullshit if you ask me

are these artists dumb? its not like any of that shit was commercially released. its not like people who are watching that stuff ARENT fans of his who already own his music. IMO youtube is like advertising

I agree with him. When I first heard about youtube last year, I was frankly amazed that it existed. It didn't seem legal to post stuff you don't own. Not to say I wouldn't take advantage of it if I was technologically able to!

I can see if the band plans to release the stuff or already has. If there are no release plans for it then I don't see why they give a shit if it's out there. Let's face it, most of the shit on youtube won't see the light of day. It's usually just fucking lawyers with dollar signs in their eyes.

I dont understand the need to claim things. Who would record a tape off youtube? Thats the only thing i can think of to do with it.

Wow, I can't believe as musicians we don't understand the concept of intellectual property. So what if DG doesn't want it up there then take it down. Why is DG the bad guy? Don't you folks realize the amount of $$$ that Google is going to be making???

Just wait. Companies like YouTube and MySpace have some odd policies to stuff uploaded. Just wait til advertising comes up on YouTube and they start making bank!

But still it's DG and if he doesn't want to be up there, so be it. What about respect for him?

You mean like free concert bootlegs? Hm...
my point is that guys like David Grisman dont have a HUGE audience to begin with, and the people that are his fans have probably liked him for years and probably already own a lot of his stuff. Theres no full 2 hour sets of Grisman on youtube, its not like people arent going to see him live because youtube DOES NOT duplicate the live experience whatsoever, its merely a glimpse (read: advertising) Hes not losing any money from the stuff thats on youtube, especially since none of that is commercially released in the first place

if David happened to want to release the vid of him and Jerry at the Sweetwater you can be sure as shit people would buy it

From a business standpoint I think Grisman is kind of walking a fine line between a good and bad decision. Yes as the artist, he has the intellectual property rights to his body of work, recordings, and yes, video footage.

But I think maybe his attorney was behind this decision and not his manager. You tube is a great advertising platform as someone here stated earlier, and can only help an artist like Grisman who is not on the pop charts. it isn't like kids are out there asking about David Grisman Quintet. BUt You Tube could lead a few kids his way, quite a few in fact.

If he was poised to release the Sweetwater sets on a DVD, I don't think a few clips on You Tube would stop any of his fans from buying it, in fact, it would most definitely boost the sales. All they would have to do is put a nice package together and add some bonus footage never before seen and presto, you have a winner!

My guess is that he doesn't plan to produce this DVD, or have Justin Kreutzman put it together which would be a good move as well. SO Gris, you can do what you want, but I think you are making a mistake as a business man.

Seeing you at Tipitina's in '97 during Jazz Fest was still the musical highlight of that year for me. I just won't be asking you for any business advice.

OK here it is...... IMO. Google makes me nerveous. It is an exponentialy growing wad of information. Information that one day could be sorted. By what, or who, I don't know. This sort of thing needs checks and balances. Although I do like a good live vid clip. Really what we have here is a greedy human fighting a greedy monster. Right thing for the wrong reason maybe. Who loses? I gues we just might not get to see the sweetwater set for a while. It'll be back............ Sorry about the ramble I haven't had my coffee yet.

Peace out,
DF

PS I don't think the Dawg is that greedy. But again IMO once you've made "yours", let the masses have some cheap. Music is art. Art is for the people. Art should be cheap. Please people, sell cheap art!

I really think he is staking his ground for quality control which YouTube is seriously lacking.

How can anyone of us say when one has adequately "made "yours"" that decision is not up to the masses but the individual.

This is a sad state of affairs and a sad trend globally but especially in the US when the integrity, contribution, will, desire and output of the individual is trumped by the masses for things that do not impair, hurt or disrupt society.

Long live the individual!

"They [Grisman and business partner Craig Miller] say they deserve an unspecified amount of money from the hits — and advertising revenue — that that [sic] Google gets from their clips."

How rotten. Mr. Grisman, how do you get exposure these days? In the classifieds ads under "Musician For Hire?" Do you even own a computer, Dave?

Why not email the uploaders of the youtube clips and ask them to upload them to dawgnet.com? Then you get the revenue, and the fans can enjoy the experience. Did you think of dat one der Dave?

Why should Google make 1 penny from the work from Grisman?

How bitter you are.

Why slam Dave? Is it really that upsetting to you that Dave wants the money Google is receiving for doing nothing where in contrast he dedicated his life to music.

This is ridiculous.

Intellectual property is personal property. According to John Locke personal property is an inalienable right.

I agree whole heartedly with strummin and bad ass Locke. There is one comment here that says, "Whose side are you on". My answer is certainly not Google’s. They don't have the right to make money off of Dave's property. If they want to exploit his music and name, they need to have an agreement with him and they don't. I love the grateful dead for allowing me to share and collect their recorded concerts, but they don't owe me anything. It's a great gift, but they have the right not to allow You Tube, Google, or the archive to play their music.

It's illegal for you to come to my house take my guitar and borrow it for a gig and share my guitar with the band playing after you because his strings broke. You have to have permission to use other people's property. No one (including the government; although sometimes that is not the case) should have the right to take or use your property without your consent.
