I think I might have been at the show that was the beginning of the come-back of Phil's singing.

5/8/81, During Drums, Mickey had this thing that he would bring to the front of the stage and bang into a microphone that was set up for him.....not Bob or Jer's. I had seen a couple of shows that tour before this one. Mickey was doing this every night, except every other night that I recall, they removed the microphone after drums. This night they didn't. And on the U.S. Blues encore, Phil stepped up and was singing.

Englishtown, 9/3/77, they launch into Truckin', Donna's nowhere to be seen, in unison the 3 "boys" step up to their mikes and 110000 people go nuts.

Again at the Broome County Arena in Binghamton 11/6/77. Phil took his glasses off for that one.

i was always under the impression that is was more of a health related singing absence

Yep, he still sang on "Truckin'" in the late 70's, presumably on a regular basis. Video from 4/12/78 Duke U. backs this.

I imagine whether his health was poor or not here and there he just felt the urge to throw some lyrics out there. I mean eventually it probably just surged up through him and he had to let it out lol
