Was the whole band splitting it evenly? I was always under the impression that "the main guy" takes the biggest cut.

Would guess that "Caesar" is a nickname for the IRS --- "render unto Caesar the the things that are Caesar's" --- so assuming a 50 percent tax rate there (probably includes local, state and federal). Looks like Garcia himself got about a third of the gross (before taxes). If I remember right, John Kahn was paid more than the other band members were, and the rest would have gone to expenses -- per diems, tour bus, hotel, Parish, sound/light guy. And, of course, stash. For most of his touring years, Garcia only cared that he had his guitar and cigarettes, it was only later on that the GD became incapable of staying anyplace other than the Four Seasons.

In those days things were done on a cash basis. There were stories about Rock cashing in plane tickets then charging new ones, or charging hotels to credit cards instead of using the funds the promoter provided, to feed the habit. Things get weird on the road. My favorite was the story about Waylon Jennings and his band playing poker with their bus driver and losing steadily to him for years, to the point where the band was fundamentally working for the bus driver.

Too funny... i was at those gigs. It says "NW Tour" in the check note. Jerry gave one of his backup singers cabfare with a tip for the cabbie...Love it!

If you do the math on that check ... $800 for the JGB NW tour in December 84 was 4 shows -- Eugene 12-5, Portland 12-6 and 12-7 and Seattle 12-8 ... so looks like $200 a night for Jackie, plus cab fare.

The perceived riches of known musicians, particularly in those days was often exaggerated.

The big money comes from hits and publishing.

Hank Devito, steel player in Emmy Lou's first Hot Band, shared that he made $450 a week, very good salary for a working musician in the 70s but hardly getting rich. When he wrote "Queen of Hearts" and Juice Newton blew it up....he got rich.

Garcia buying his house from the advance from the first solo record was great by hippie standards and that real estate is crazy expensive now but was middle class then.

I was backstage at a Mahavishnu Orchestra show in St. Pete and saw their check:$1800. Assuming that was half, this was after and the deal then was often half up front/half after, they got paid about $4000 for headlining a show in a 8,000 seat arena at $5 a ticket.
