Hi all,

I know this topic has been discussed here in terms of JBL 120s and extension cabs for the Blues Jr., but my question is a bit different. I'm trying to get as "Jerry" a tone of the little guy as possible and think I am some of the way there, but--as is the case for many--the headroom is a lacking. (I'm playing a Nashville Tele with no mods, with an external buffer just before my effects loop. Sounds pretty good at lower volumes. I have used this rig for small gigs and it just gets a bit too fuzzy at the louder margins.) After much knob twiddling and reading online, I am guessing that swapping out the stock speaker *might* give me what I'm looking for. So, A) is this a valid a thought?; B) what non-JBL speaker would be best? I want to keep this experiment affordable. I see Eminence speakers like the Swamp Thang and others that, according to BIllM's webpage, fit and are in the $100 to $150 range--very doable for me in this experiment. So, am I chasing shadows here, or has anyone done such a swap and can speak to their results?

JBL k120 is the best thing for jerry tone in the BJ. The Cannabis Rex was an awesome all around in my BJ but not really jerry. I ended up with a K110 on a new baffle, Billm twin tone stack mods, modtone reverb tank. Its about as jerry as that little booger can get.

Check out and listen to the eminence red white and blues. It looks to be a good candidate for what your after.

A- It is a valid thought. I had the same issue with the stock speaker breaking up too early.
B- Higher wattage, fuller range, tight bottom with a sparkly top should do the trick.

I concur. Just keep searching Ebay and good deals for K120s crop up usually once/month. I just picked a pair of vintage K120s that were practically unused. They were obfuscated in Hilton cabs so nobody bid on them. Final price was $100 each: http://www.ebay.com/itm/262636414853?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

Also search for the E120 which also can be found for an efficient price from time to time. The E120 is about the twice weight of a K120 though.

Honestly, before swapping speakers and bench time, etc. I'd suggest you playing a Deluxe Reverb Reissue and see if that doesn't float your boat more. A JG type player who really made an impression upon me was playing an American Standard Tele into a DRRI and sounded great.

I'm sure it's a fine amp and I appreciate the suggestion. I'm limited in budget and was hoping that a fairly minor investment in the Blues Jr. would get me closer to the flame.

I gave it as I don't think the problem with the Blues Jr is the speaker but the box and circuit. Blues Jrs go for around $500 used and DRRI around $700. Speakers go between 75-200 so didn't think it would be that far apart.

You pretty much have to take the amp apart, but yes, it's very possible. I did it myself no problem and I know others on this board have too.
