As I am now listening to a 30 minute dark star from 8-27-1972 I came to wonder what the longest single version of dark star is. I'd be interested to hear others' experiences of superlongjams of dark star or any other song for that matter. I remember a 39 minute version of cryptical envelopment on Hundred Year Hall, but can't think of any longer than that. I'm just curious as to how much stamina the boys had when it came to these epic jam songs.

Longest song is Dark Star. Two are contenders:

12-6-73 has a 43:05 Dark Star with nothing sandwiched in.

5-11-72 has a Dark Star>Drums>Dark Star which is slightly longer, but has a 4 minutes Drums thrown in.

Dick's Picks 13 has a great 35 minute Scarlet>Fire as bonus track at the end of Disc 2. It's from 11/1/79. I'd be surprised, but glad, to find one longer.

I could be wrong here, and if I am im sure TS can come correct me lol, but I do believe there is a Dark Star that clocks in at over an hour. And even if not in one file then definitely altogether. Say like DS>TOO>DS>Wharf>So on and so forth. Just because it isnt one file. Its still all one jam to me. And im sure there are quite a few of those that go well over 40 minutes.

If I remember correctly, the Dark Star from Rotterdam 72' clocks in at just under 1 hour long.

I'm not really in a position to check my CD's (being at work), but there also exists a 1974(?) Playin' which is about 45 minutes, and also a 74' Scarlet which is of the same length.

I have only a little listening experience with 5/11/72, but 12/6/73 is one of my alltime faves- not because of its length, but because its length is actually warranted by all the interesting landscapes the band visits... and destroys!!!

The intro is amazing because rather than the typical opening lick from a standstill the bass, piano and drums gradually trickle in straight from tuning, playfully sliding into the theme, sweeping Jerry and Bob into their orbit before they seem to realize what's happening. Later on, Philzilla stomps all over Tokyo... classic WOS show.

Good memory. 05-21-74 from University of Washington has a 46:26 version of Playin'.

there is a 45 minute (no lie!) version of TOO on DP 23 (or 22, 24 maybe?) I can't remember but it's from Baltimore 1972. There isnt even a cryptical attatched to it. Straight up TOO for almost an hour.

Playin' from 5-21-74 is 46:27 long, actually longer due to the fact that the first few seconds of the recording are cut off. HIGHLY recommended. Exceeds the limits of tonality to pure sound at points, and Phil lays down some really gritty lines.

edit: whoops, Green Rhythm mentioned this earlier. Still, highly recommended.
