does anyone know what the Dead or for that matter, Jerry thought of Pink Floyd? i'd like to hear his opinion on Dark Side of the Moon, or a song like Echoes. anybody know anything?

As a lifelong fan of PF, and the GD, I can not recall having ever heard or read anything on the matter. They did have a collaboration of sorts in doing separate songs used as part of the soundtrack to a movie called "Zabrisky Point" I believe. PF's somewhat obscure album "More" was used in the movie. Jerry's not on anything from that album but he did contribute some music also used in the movie.

Also i believe they chose the producer of Terrapin station because of the sounds that he made with floyd, i am referencing to what i recall from Rock's book.... perhaps i have the wrong GD album but i remember something of the sort...

I don't think I ever heard of the GD covering a Floyd tune. I would be shocked.

The Dead chose Keith Olsen (producer of Terrapin Station) because they liked the work he did with Fleetwood Mac. Plus I think Bob really dug him because Keith produced one of Bob's albums. But unless I'm mistaken, Keith didn't have anything to do with PF.

i was going from memory from what i read in Rock's book Living With the Dead... you are right about it being fleet wood mac and not PF... i looked it up... it was when the guy took the masters to abbey road i was thinking he had something to do with floyd..

i will rummage through my cds and lists and see if i can find what i am thinking of as far as the cover, i am pretty sure it was crazy diamond..

again i could be mistaking another band for the dead i do that sometimes...

i know i have a bunch of beatles and jimmy cliff covers along with the dylan tunes they covered...

but i feel certain i have a floyd tune with jerry singing somewhere

Gans or somebody did a mix a while back of "Shakedown Street" I think, melded with Floyd's "Brick's in the Wall"

You're right. I know the "Dead" (post-Jerry) did. I saw them at Bonnaroo and they did a really nice Shine On You Crazy Diamond.

Wish you were here woulda been a cool song for Jerry to do I think. And I can picture Bobby doin a couple tunes from them. Maybe Young Lust or Money.

these PNF and dead versions are probably what i was thinking of... i am still looking and my CD list got wiped when my old Comp crashed...

I can't imagine the Greatful Dead covering Pink Floyd.
While I have great respect for Floyd, the great bulk of their music just is wrong on several different levels for a improvisation heavy band to play.

The song structures are way too rigid, there's little space for improvisation, plus the lyrics and meanings of the songs are just so... different.

Basically they're both great bands, but the music could barely be any more different.

floyd's music comes from a different place than the dead. jerry always said his intention was making music that came from a happy place to make people happy. floyd on the other hand can be sort of a freak-out trip (a la The Wall, if you've ever watched the movie as well). i find floyd to be really heavy and emotionally intense - much darker.
