Ok first lemme tell you a bit about myself, im a young head 16 yrs young, i love all dead, and just cuz im a younsster doesnt mean i dont know my dead. ive seen ratdog once, and im seeing them again this summer with the allman bros.(if i can get tickets ) i hate young fake dead heads, who just know touch of grey. I love to find outstanding, rare, or really intense versions of good songs, So my last couple of threads have been what ur fav version of this or that, im sorry if this is annoying, I just love hearing classic dead, and what types of dead you guys like, or eras of dead or whatevr. i myself love 70-74, but i have also i have a new found love for 80s dead.

so heres my question whats ur favorite version of bobby's tune Feel like a stranger. i personally dig the without a net version. but tell me ur favorite dates or albums.

there are some intense versions of this song on a lot of the live threads, any of them are sweet.
I never saw the Dead, but DSO did an intense version of this song that almost made me shit my pants. There last show here in Atlanta was incredible, but it only makes me more envious of anyone who really got to see Jerry and the Dead

I have a lil story about that one: before the band came out, I had wormed my way up to about 2nd/3rd row in front of Phil's spot... when the band came out, EVERYONE right around me started calling out "Bertha, Bertha!", but not me: In my loudest clearest voice, I hollered "HEY PHIL...HALF...STEHHHP!!!" until it was clear they would do exactly that... very gratifying indeed!! What a great show. Check out the Terrapin!

yea dude tell phil to stop singing .... he may be the funkiest bass player ever to walk the earth but he cannot sing even a little bit .. that really made me laugh this morning ..... oh as far as Stranger goes .... I heard one the other day where Bobby blew every word in the first two verses ... that was fun ... but you should check out the DVD Downhill From Here or whatever it is called .. a really nice Stranger on there ... I agree with the 4/20 version as well

oh hell yeah! I was at that one too... 7/17/89: KILLER Stranger! I love all the grins exchanged by Jerry and Brent in the viddy of that one. I seldom looked at the screens while attending a show- it made me feel detached, less like I was at a concert and more like I was sitting somewhere watching it on TV, so that was something I usually tried to avoid while actually there.

I'm sure there are plenty of other threads in which to bash or defend Phil's vocal chords, but he's actually a highly skilled singer with major physical limitations.

yea phil actually used to sing the higher parts back in the day, despite having such a deep voice.....i think now phil has a quality to his voice that is more like dylan not to sweet sounding but full of emotion and passion

As for FLAS, one of my favorites is from a Fox Theatre show in 85. I forget the exact date and am too lazy to search for it, but I believe it opens a 2 show run in Atlanta in 85.

As for Phil singing...it's ironic that for YEARS, the crowd would do the occasional "Let Phil Sing" chant and people would in fact go nuts when he did sing Box or Tom Thumb's, etc....now, all I ever hear are complaints about Phil's singing. The guy really can't win. On top of it all (as TS pointed out), Phil had vocal chord polyps or something which did cause him to stop singing way back in the 70s I believe.

I think he started singing a lot of the Garcia tunes with TOO because noone else had the balls to do them (for reasons I can only surmise)....just my guess. He's taken a lot of voice lessons and HAS improved a great deal over the past 6 years or so.

BTW, anyone see reviews of Phil's last 2 shows in NYC on Monday and Tuesday....The first night was by all accounts a real clunker to say the least. Check out Philzone.com for more on it. On a more positive note, he's said to be looking in very good health and spirits.

Those two shows are in my top 5 all time shows. The energy in Hampton that weekend was unlike any other time I had seen them. Went down w/o tix and got in both nights. At the campsite that night of the first show, one of my buddies was attacked by a huge goose....
