When it doesn't fit anywhere else

Greetings,
I may have already asked this...
Is there an inexpensive recording setup for creating files for SoundCloud. Every time I walk down this road it starts to look like $1000. I have a couple of Mac's. Amplitube. Garageband. I really don't use GB because it's a time such, and I'd rather practice or jam.
USB Mic? Mic preamp like Presonus? Do I have to learn a DAW, or whatever they're called.

You folks want sound samples. I'd like them to be decent. I would like to tip toe.

Thanks to all.

I'vw been doing some research into this lately, having grown tired of my half-assed iPhone recordings. I have a PC, and chose Reaper for a DAW.I'm gonna go with the focusrite Scarlett 2i4 for my interface. I have sm57's and 58's, and am adding an AT 2020A for a general purpose mic. Here's a you tube playlist that helps demystify the process somewhat.

Reaper with a license is like $60, you can use it for free, if you want, I prefer to support the folks who build the products I use, and it won't break the bank. The Focusrite is $175 new, found one used @ GC for $120. AT2020 is around $130 used, but I plan on micing my cab with a 57.

So, if you already have a few mics laying around, you could have a 'home studio' up and running for under 200 bucks.
You could go even cheaper by checking out the $99 Presonus Audiobox that ships with a stripped down version of Studio One (DAW).
Hope that helps.

You're just wanting to make some recordings of your guitar rig and post them on Soundcloud, and have them sound better than an iPhone? I don't see the need to overcomplicate it with software that's designed for manipulating multi-track full band recordings and whatnot, I'd just get something like this: http://www.kraftmusic.com/zoom-h4nsp-ha ... oCE2Pw_wcB

It's a nice simple recorder that gives you either a .WAV or .MP3 file which you can easily send around via any file sharing service. Perfect for Soundcloud.
