Hey guys,
It's been a while hope all is well, anyway I sold off my Garcia gear a couple of years ago, the size weight movability to usefulness for what I was playing ratio was the deciding factor. So this August I found myself putting together a GD band to perform at our post wedding after party, we got married on Jerry's B Day, summer of GD50 ect, so it seemed right. Trouble was, no Garcia rig! I have been playing a custom P90 Rosewood Tele style guitar with 3 pickups and a handwired Deluxe which was pretty close but also pretty far off mostly in the speaker department. I'd had my eye on that JHS Colour Box for a while because I liked the idea of a line boost type pedal that could overdrive in a very non cookie cutter kind of way. The amp was right, and the guitar actually was pretty right, I found that I really missed the JBL sound.
Cutting to the chase, I got a Colour Box and used to to great effect as like a JBL speaker emulator. Having a clean boost with a 3 band eq and a " pre and master vol" all in one pedal is fantastic! It allowed me to kind of tune in the really boosted mid's and get rid of lots of the fender low end side of the eq curve. The treble knob is a little touchy and gets glassy pretty quick but I set up the eq on the pedal just like I used to have my twin set (exactly like how I've read here lots of times no bass- lots of mid's ect.) the cocked frownie face eq curve in short. The "pre amp" side of the pedal really lets you get that clean but hairy fender pre amp break up sound that's so hared to quantify. I ran it at the end of my signal chain on my pedal board, so the effects saw it last before going out to the amp. It's not perfect but the size/weight/price ratio worked for me. I miss my old rig still but in the meantime this thing is totally doing it for me.
