In school i was assigned a project. The project is to create a powerpoint focusing on 10 songs that each fit a different type of literary term. The terms are basic terms when writing a poem, such as metaphors, alliteration, allusion, etc. I would like to include as many GD songs as possible, so any of you english majors/heads out there, help me out! Your help is greatly appreciated.

some ideas from my limited literary knowledge while paging through my best beloved blue song book:

Simile: Your rain falls like crazy fingers
also in crazy fingers "Lady Lullaby" of the chorus is personification

metaphor: in Comes a Time "an empty cup that only love can fill" clearly not a drinking utensil!

allusion: there are numerous biblical references, such the entire Greatest Story Ever Told, "Cain caught Abel" in Mississippi Half Step.

Looks like Rain is a big metaphor for the rainstorm with loss over losing a lover.

Loose Lucy "She's my yoyo, I'm her string" metaphor

alliteration: Shake-it Sugaree, China Cat

I've seen it suggested on these threads that Brown Eyed Woman's "bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean" is a metaphor for a woman (Delilah Jones) who has aged so that her exterior (bottle) is dusty/weathered but she still has the same vitality/energy/sex ability as before (liquor is clean). makes sense to me

Death Don't have No Mercy is clear personification of death

Hyperbole can be found in a lot of places. Loser's opening line "If i had a gun for every ace I've drawn, I could arm a town the size of Abilene" and Big River's "Tears I cry for that woman are gonna flood you big river"

I bet Terrapins got some good examples in there, but damned if i understand them.

Ripple is full of metaphors, I would say. Also I saw an interesting interpretation of Rider somewhere on the site, probably in the song forum. Also China is a pretty obvious reference to LSD, perhaps that could be used as an example of allusion?

samson and delilah is an obvious allusion to the bible, it is a biblical story after all

thanks a lot guys - i ended up using Ripple for metaphor and Samson and Delilah for Allusion. Other non GD songs i used were Paranoid by Sabbath for its rhyming, and The Ballad of John and Yoko (Beatles) and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (Band) for narrative poem.
