Some of my favorite Phil Bombs were when the boys would come out of space into Other One and Phil would start it off with this incredible bomb that would blow my hair back! Can't think of an exact one (and not sure why he stopped doing it!) but I think there were some in '85 that ripped it open.

I don't think Phil ever did totally stop doing the "Crack of Doom" (at one point I was fond of calling it the "Galloping Thunder") intro for the Other One, but it gradually became the exception rather than the rule. I actually love a lot of the more seamless jams into Other One (9/12/88 comes to mind), but some great bombastic ones of later years include my fave of all time 6/27/83, as well as a huge one from 8/19/89 and another rip-snorter: 7/18/90... also 7/7/81, maybe?

The Grateful Dead album 1971 (Skullf!ck album) captures Phil's bass very well, plenty of bombs to listen out for.

yeah man Bobby and Phil have almost perfected their respective tones. the technology is there to give ya what ya want. definitely "new age" bombs going on there. love the saxophone with the phil band. reminds me some of bobby's current direction!

I recall seeing and interview where Phil talks about bombs. The system is set up specifically for them.

i agree this is my all time favorite bomb. the first time i heard it on live/dead my mind was blown. say what you want about flea or victor wooten but i'd like to see either of them drop such an acutely spine melting explosion as that

There are phil bombs and then phil bombs that you can hear the spaekers fry, like spac '85, hershey '85 and portland , maine, '82 come to mind

It's easy to get lost in Phil's playing when listening to him. And when you've got those speakers turned way up, those Phil Bombs are more like Explosions
