Gosh it becomes more clear just how articulate Garcia was when his spontaneous solos are examined note for note...and even better proper voicings. They are better than other guys composed stuff. It can make one feel so small and hopeless , like Garcia's comment about Art Tatum humbling those that begin to think they're pretty good.

I took a history of jazz class in college from Paul Tanner, who was the 2nd trombone in the Glenn Miller orchestra. I still remember him playing a piece off the Art Tatum album And God Was in the House, where Tatum bent a note played on piano, which is technically impossible. Tanner played it back repeatedly, saying "I have no idea how he did that...listen to that again." I feel the same way every so often listening to some Jerry riffs.

There is definitely composition going on in Jerry's solos ,there are guys who just get in the pentatonic box and choose notes. Jer is not one of them.
I can't tell you how many times I will have 2 second phrase looping at 25% speed just thinking what the F is this guy doing until it just comes to me
And Transcribing john Kahn is even worse. Just listen to the outro jam of Deal and try pick out what he is playing it is very elusive.

actually I use The "amazing slow downer" by Roni . There are a lot of programs out there that will slow down music at pitch but, I have not found one that will do it with the fidelity that ASD does. The Have a video player that will do the same thing "the ultimate DVD player" well worth the investment. I slow the music down to learn it then transcribe and check the transcription by syncing the 2 together.
