I have jbl E120s that I had Tonetubby recone for me and they are awesome and yes heavy. I split the cab and set them in a HT cab and built a head cab.

I'm not too concerned about weight. I'm pretty strong, and I have two wheel dolly.

You will be, trust me. The twin is a heavy beast. I'm also pretty strong and have a dolly but carrying up and down the stairs from my basement, and out to the garage preclude the dolly - strike one. Going into venues that are either upstairs or downstairs - strike two. And even with the dolly, tricky at best. So far, no strike three!

My solution is going to be to just put one speaker into the cab. I only run the amp at half power, and therefore only have one speaker hooked up. I just bought an Eminence Commonwealth and will be slotting that in place of the jensens. If I ever want to use it at full power again, I'll just pop another speaker into it.

If you are serious about getting the tone you want, then you are in for a hard lesson. Many here,including myself, have also suffered this lesson, spending, wasting, money on gear that is sub par, but we thought would be good enough. Only the actual gear Jerry used is good enough! Your going to want a JBL in the future. You will most likely get one as your desire to get better tone keeps nagging you. You will have wasted your money on the Eminence. Book it!

One issue with the Commonwealths I had was fitment in a reissue twin cab. The flanges are larger than most modern speakers and I could not get the commonwealth to line up correctly side by side. If you are only running one there should not be an issue but you might want to look at the baffle boards geometry closely if two are ever going to be an option.

We'll see. I have a good feeling about the Commonwealth. By all descriptions it should produce the tone I'm seeking...but we'll see. I don't need to sound just like Garcia..I play in a tribute band, but I also play in two bands that do my own music, and it's good to have the ability to steer away from Jerry's tone a little bit without having to have a completely seperate rig. Heck, the rig I have now gets me 90% there,; I just want a more fully developed tone than what the Jensens will provide.

The Commonwealth is in and it sounds unbelieveably good. I'll make some recordings soon and post. Mind you, my 65 Reissue is far from stock; it has Mercury Magnetic transformers, Svetlana 6L6's, has been taken down to half power (so it hits the sweet spot at a lower volume) and the "normal channel" has been disabled, allowing more signal into the tremelo channel. But the Emminence put the tone over the top. I A/B tested with the stock Jensen (since I left one of them in the amp for now) and the Commonwealth put it to shame. It has great chimey, sparkly highs, warm yet tight and full low end, smooth mids with no harshness at all. Beautiful speaker. And oh yeah...heavy as f**k.

I am going to put my speakers in a 2x12 cab and put my amp in a separate cab down the road, I think.

No, I can see what you meant about the flange on the CW. I have one CW and one Jensen, and they fit together. If I want a second CW I'll have to do some thinking outside the box for sure!

I have a pal who builds amp cabs and he is going to give me an estimate on building a cab for my amp, so I can turn it from a combo to a head and 2 1x12"s. Much easier on the back!
