I just got picked up in JGB tribute band. Yay! I'm excited! But I now need to go from futzing with this rig every once in a while to getting it gig ready. I'm constantly swapping out dirt pedals in my other bands. It's fun for me. But for this I would like to settle on one setup. I"m really curious what everybody is using for their Jerry dirt sounds and thought it would be cool to have all in one thread.

So, that's what this thread is about. List your dirt chain in order! Feel free to expound if you are so inclined.

Here is what I'm thinking (subject to revision--I have to change it up a little before I settle down, right?):

keeley katana (boost, blaster type)-->BB Preamp (dist.)--> Earth Drive (edge of breakup sounds)

Go!

MXR Dist + …with the tone pot cranked from wide clyde to totally choked. Sounds like Jerry to me, except for the playing! :-)
Earth Drive …for just a touch of hair & dirt.

OBEL Strat (Waldo Buffer) > SMS > Mc250 (or 2100) GCX > Mutron III & MXR Carbon Copy & MXR Phase 100 & BOSS OC3 (Edit: Octave not more Dist) . Powered by Voodoo Labs Pedal Power II.

Need me the right Wah pedal. That's next. Maybe the new Biegel Octave divider.

So Dist +, Earth drive, OD3. Cool.

Hi rugger!
An original MXR Dist+ (script or block) is what you`ll be wanting. I think these were produced
from approx 74-Early 80`s.
After that Dunlop bought the name and put them out...sounding nothing close to
the sweet transparent tones the originals had.

Full dirt: Boss OD-2r

Slight "hair": Timmy

Never could get a distortion plus circuit to sound right--I tried both the Whirlwind Gold Box, which is allegedly the same as the MXR script version (though I have some doubts) and also a build-your-own-clone version. Both were fine pedals, but neither sounded like Jerry's did to me. Perhaps I was using them wrong. Anyway, the Boss pedal sounds just right to me, especially on the turbo setting, for stuff like Samson, etc.

Good luck in your quest!

I have a newer MXR D+. By itself it sounds less than great. But used in conjunction with the Earthdrive - (I use the ED most of the night for a wee bit o'dirt) it seems to nail it. Also, it definitely matters where I place it in the chain. I put it right before the ED, and that seems smoother than if I put it right after it.

My only dirt pedals are a Keeley-modded TS-9 & a JHS Morning Glory overdrive. Most of my distortion comes from my various pre-amps in my rack (Custom Audio Electronics & Randall RM4 w/various Jaded Faith MTS Modules).

I do have a 70's script Distortion + and a bunch of others that could probably fit the bill as well. Lots of ways to get there as evidenced by the replies so far. Keep them coming!

Just to throw something different out there, I like the OLD Hot Cake (with normal/mid-lift switch).

Out of loop into Dist +, OD1, OD2, then other non dirt pedals and back into loop. After the volume on guitar, it's Earth Drive and then analog delay. This is the winning combination!!!

Since this pic was taken, I moved the micro amp to where the Earth Drive was and put the Earth Drive where the Micro amp was. Much better to drive the Earth Drive or the Whirlwind Gold box when needed/wanted.

I go Scarlet Fire Wolf/milobender Tele --> Boss Hyper Fuzz --> Whirlwind Gold Box --> Boss MT2 -- T-Rex Dr Swamp --> Earth Drive --> SMS --> MC2100 --> Beyma Liberty 2x12 (Hogan cab). I rarely use anything other than the Dr Swamp and Earth Drive. Oh, and there's all the other effects too.
