I currently have a Twin Reverb 1965 reissue with the stock speakers. I recently ordered a pair of JBL E-120s and am planning on building those into a cab of their own. I'm thinking of the best way to get a good tone, currently I'm using a les paul custom but will soon have a wolf replica. Should I try and run the twin into the JBLs somehow? Or would buying an SMS and plugging that into the JBLs work? What do you think my best option is?

The SMS is only a preamp, you would need a power amp as well. The Twin would sound great with the JBLs either in an extension cab or in the combo. If you get the right power amp the SMS would be awesome (that's what I use with a McIntosh MC2100 power amp). It all depends on what tone you're going for and how much you want to spend to get there.

So could I run from the SMS into the Twin and then through the JBLs? I'm looking for a 77-79ish tone by the way.

you could, in theory but you'd probably want to get your amp modded for a preamp out/power amp in. The SMS pretty much does the same thing as your Twin preamp section. It's modded and has nicer components but is essentially a Twin preamp section. You don't really need two preamps and probably not recommended to run them in chain. If that makes sense. You could also get your Twin modded with Jerry-ish amp mods.

If you're thinking about an SMS which I think is an awesome box and I love mine. I'd think of it totally separate of your Twin. Especially if you're gonna get JBLs and a speaker cabinet. You're just a nice power amp away from a badass rig. If $$ is an issue I'd look into a MosValve MV962 power amp. I have one I got for something like $135. Plenty of power (80w per side) and gets a pretty damn good tone especially if you are looking for a Jerry sound. A McIntosh of some sort is gonna get you closer. If you want a tube power amp Mesa Boogie makes a 50/50 tube power amp that I've seen go for $400 or so, Carvin makes one too but I don't know the model number. I've got a 65 Twin Reissue that I keep as a backup.

Throw the JBL's in the Twin. Change the tone stack cap values to .022 and your nearly there.

If you have money to spend (sell the reissue Twin), buy an SMS and a Mac MC50 and build a cab for each JBL. I run one 12" with my MC50 and it's plenty loud!

What he said- even without the cap change you're most of the way there. I'd spend a few months to a year woodsheding with the Wolf/Twin/JBLs and with that experience under your belt see where you want to go.
