Hi- I'm a longtime Dead/Garcia fan, but now that I am no longer working I have plenty of time on my hands. Practicing a lot of guitar, but.....

Which of the Dick's/Dave's Pick's series would you say are essential to own?

I guess it all depends on what era one likes...I prefer 1967-1980 but I see something I like during every era.
I see a lot of these available on ebay and other places on the net....
Where to start?

Might as well start at the beginning.
The first song you will encounter on Dicks Picks One is an astounding Here Comes Sunshine.

Here is another option. Go to a site like http://www.deadlistening.com/2009/02/li ... -dead.html or https://archive.org/post/33268/the-10-m ... dead-shows.

Then head over to Google and type "Grateful Dead 1974-08-06", and almost every time you'll get a reference to an Internet Archive link. About 3" from the top of your screen you see "Source." Soundboard is best. Some Audience recorded shows are outstanding. There is even a streaming app for your smartphone.

Unlimited GD pleasure for a reasonable price...if not actually possessing a physical CD is not important.

Personally I've been working my way through as many WOS shows as I can find to try and break out of my '76-78 rut.

DP 15 Englishtown is a great place to start especially since it was the Anniversary of that show yesterday.

Dicks Picks 2 and 3 are awesome, I also love DP 29 (especially the 5/21 show).

Probably my least favorite DP is 35, its still really good, but there are other 71 shows that blow this one up imo.

Anything from 77 for sure. The pick from 76 is interesting, as the band was fresher and more creative with setlists than almost any other time. DP 4, 8, and the Tahoe show from 68 are peak early, "rough around the edges" formative dead. DP 10 is essential, it's said it changed attendees lives after all. It's an absolute powerhouse, herculean performance like a sledgehammer to your brain

You mention Dave's/ Dicks picks, so to be sure we cover it, do you have The 72 Veneta Creamery Benefit Show? If not, your quest should start right there.

IMHO, you can't go wrong with any Dave or Dicks Picks. They are or have been release because each are great in their own way. If you have a favorite year of Dead sound then go by year and grab a couple. If you don't have a favorite year then start in order. I personally love 74 era, with 72 right behind it. But I love ALL of the years because each has something to offer.

Dave's picks can be expensive and hard to come by. You may be able to work backwards perhaps. So keep your eyes peeled for any of those as well. The recent Dave's 11 from Wichita 1972 is awesome.

archive.org is the best place to get live stuff I have found. Buff War memorial [5-9] 1977 (Help>Slip>frank) and Mcnichols 8-13-1979 (Shakedown; Uncle>River) are 2 I liked a lot. Sorry I forget the exact dates right now.

The official releases are not available on soundboards versions though...and that number is steadily increasing as releases pile up.
There is a way to burn the material to CD's via Realplayer if you like, track by track though.

5/9/77 (Buffalo) is my favorite show of all time!!!!!! Except for Sunrise. My favorite jam ever happened during The Music Never Stopped! The soundboard cuts out at the best moment, and its filled with audience recording, but it's still amazing. Give a listen, you'll be blown away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ah how could I forget DP 10, the first DP I ever listened to. Jerrys tone is hot like fire, I listen to that Loser solo over and over cause its the GOAT
