There's lots of guys building some really nice Jerry guitars. In the below $1k range Phred guitars are probably your best bet. Are you someone who can do any of the work yourself? If so, you could try Warmoth, they make some really nice stuff, you could probably come in around $1k with one of those.

I could do the electronic work myself, and with the setup/shim work a friend could handle it. Changed everything on my PRS SE besides the wood! I'd love another project like that, but a quality mandolin might be a bigger need at the moment.
