Im not sure which scares me more: 40-somethings pining for all music to be modeled after Pantera, or tweeny's screaming for the next lip-synching dance troupe. No doubt prodigious guitar solos are a critical part of Rock music, but usually epics are composed and liable to become rote. Like movies that are filled with cutting edge special effects but have little substance underneath the sheen, legato appreggio runs risk becoming mere pornograghy, prioritizing titillation over the essentials (of good music). Heresy is not outright falsehood, but promoting a smaller truth at the expense of the larger, more principle truths. But, in the right hands and context (Ywingie e.g.) these can become moving spectacles that both inspire and communicate beauty and truth. Other times they can be musical heresy.

This makes me think of the 'supergroup' col claypool's bucket of burning brains at Bonnaroo '09, iirc.

Buckethead, claypool & Bernie Worrell, I thought it was gonna be cool but it actually sucked bc it was one long guitar solo by buckethead that just was not interesting. Guy can do te fastest finger tapping arpeggios ever but that got boring after about 10 minutes. Dude literally did the same riff for an hour straight I thought it was awful. Then he goes through this whole stupid robot routine, puts on these weird gloves, goes back to the guitar & does the same riff he had been doing for an hour!
IMO it was some of the most boring jamming I've ever seen, who cares how difficult something is to play if it sounds like shit? How can you play the same riff for an hour, not surprising that band only played once. Guitar solos can be awesome, but they can get boring quick if they're not interesting


The Grateful Dead were arguably the first jam band, but they are not really a jam band, they're a songwriting band & their success was due to the quality of their songs, there's not many other bands that wrote on the level of the dead & people truly LOVE GD songs.

Good ole grateful dead....keep comin back and Im not exactly sure why except they are versatile and authentic. I gotta admit its all Jerry for me though too...I appreciate the others, but only at the highest level with Jerry leading the way melodically.

I've said this before, and it's been stated above.

The epic can so quickly become ordinary. Who doesn't get goosebumps when you hear Gilmours solo in Comfortably Numb. It was great in '77, and it's still great. But every time he plays it, it must closely resemble that solo. What was once great...is now dead. Immutable.

It also tangentially ties to issues like Robert Plant saying he can't do a Zep reunion because he can't imagine singing Stairway with any authenticity ever again. It's honesty...and it's admirable. When I first was listening to those epic Zep albums I was blown away. Since I've Been Lovin' You. Kashmir. All of it...dead in a way. Timeless, but...

Then there was Jerry. Living in the moment. Evolving his improvisations. Keeping us interested with enough of the familiar, but always taking us to new places. Even sometimes letting us down. Raw courage every night. That's what I saw, and it's probably part of what did him in.

To my ear much of that fret-tapping stuff hasn't done much since the 2nd VanHalen album.
