Ignore the guitar for now, but here's the caveat- I want the amp to be able to pull off non-dead (jam band, classic rock) covers when tweaked. I know, I want everything . So a non-one trick pony that will get real close to anything from 72-77 bobby. On a side note, has anyone ever gotten a good bobby with a mesa lonestar classic?

I believe Mesa is your ticket.
The Mark series is great up to IIC. Not sure about the plus. Mark V is also nice. I'm not a Bob gear expert, but I believe he used a IIB head in that era. Had a Mark I with no reverb and a K120. Awesome Amp. I've been after a Studio Pre for a while. I'd like to do a Studio Pre/50:50 rig.

Never owned a Lone Star, but I've been intriqued. I have owned a V-Twin, 20:20, and have a TA-15. Also look at the TA-30. The 30 has reverb, and a bit more power. I've seen 30 heads for $900, which is a steal. Lonestars are in that range as well.

There's Jerry cleans in all the above as well. And of course...a bunch of gritty options.

What size rooms do you play? Are you mic'd?

BTW, 72-77 is like 4 amp changes. I can cover most of that with my Fender VibroVerb (Fender amp + 15" speaker and Bobby used 15" speakers in the early 70s).

IMO the guitar functionality is 100 times more important than the effects:
Get a bright guitar with dual humbuckers or mini buckers and coil taps with OOP and you're gonna get closer than any effect will ever get you.
