Man, i love Brent to death. i would dare to say that Brents style was about 10x more inspired than Vinces - sure. but Vince was certainly inspired himself, his quotes after Jerrys death tell all. In that stage of their evolution, im not sure totally ridiculously good keys were the answer. With Jerry doing so less and Bobby doin so much, it wouldve drowned out the basic premise of whatever they were playing at the time. also something to take in consideration is that Brent had experience playing with Bobby, and Vince had none.
I've gone through fazes with Brent. When i first got into the Dead i thought he sounded like a total retard. But then i started hearing the tunes he wrote, i started to really like Brent. at the end of my fascination with 80's Dead it occurred to me that they had totally given up on their vocal arrangements. they dont call it Junky Dead for nuthin. With Jerry's sweetness and Bobby's (sometimes
) smooth vocal approach , i couldnt see were Brents sandpaper gruff sounding voice made use. Now keep in mind that wasnt 100% of the time. what got me was this. I went lookin for the best Black Muddy River i could find from the era. to my dismay i found to many times a thinner thoughtful Jerry voice, a struggling Bobby, and supercharged overbearing Brent. another example is on alot of Stella Blues from around that time. again a genuine emotional Jerry, almost non existent Bobby and Brent thinks he's singin "Baby we were born to run".
so, i guess im trying to say this, first i thought he sounded retarded, then i learned to appreciate him, then i learned to appreciate him but admit his vocals are retarded. go ahead, turn him up in a room full of non-deadheads and get an opinion.
