It’s been a long, strange trip, but it’s finally here! American Beauty, our collaboration with the Grateful Dead, is now hitting taps and shelves.

The band took the lead on deciding the style of beer, and they opted for a bold pale ale made with 100 percent U.S.-grown ingredients. The brewery and the band, who both built followings by connecting directly with their fans, asked their supporters to help decide on one righteous, off-centered ingredient to add to the recipe that would complement the pale ale base.

The Grateful Dead are readying the release of the craft beer the band began developing last year with Delaware brewery Dogfish Head. The special ingredient suggested by fans? Granola, according to Brewbound.

More than 1,500 fans submitted suggestions for the "American Beauty" pale ale, including the red grenadine the band mentions in "Brown-Eyed Women," jalapeños and rose hips. The suggestion for granola came from Thomas Butler, a 39-year-old chemist and homebrewer who saw his first Dead show when he was nine.

"The components of granola – honey, toasted grains, oats and fruit – offer a lot from a beer perspective," Butler said on the Dogfish Head website. "The idea is to have a sessionable ale that highlights the oats and honey with a nice 'dank' hop selection."

"American Beauty" will be available in bottles and on draft through Dogfish Head's distributors this fall.

I tweeted them earlier today, it's not it yet, but there is a release party at terrapin crossroads on the 15th, so I am hoping to find it after that.

I attended the release party last night (here in the DC area, it included the excellent acoustic Dead trio, Black Muddy River Band). I and my compatriots all agreed the new ale is excellent. Hoppy with character!

Finally found some in my area- using the Dogfish finder. Only available (at least here) in the big bottle (1 pint plus). An IPA with character, couldn't taste the granola .

I had a pint plus a little more with Indian last night and quickly zonked out on the couch- which I rarely do. Went back and checked the bottle- 9%! I think it's a limited release, so get it while you can, if for nothing else than the collector bottle. But it is good beer!

Funny coincidence that this thread popped up... The place we're playing tomorrow night has a good beer bar up front and is tapping a keg of American Beauty just for our show! Should be awesome!

I got a pint for Christmas and enjoyed it, just can't find it any where! I'll have to check out that dogfish finder.
