if it's just about playing keyboard, it's definitly brent mydland, i love his organ solos. for example on dead set (cc rider), makes the song a lot nicer.

ya, i like France. i thought it was decent songwriting, the simple main Jerry riff is nice to hear. btw groovemongrel, didnt you say Brent was you fave key player in the other topic? you have him listed
#3 here? lol 8)
Oh, that wasn't the order of my favorites. It was just a list. Brent is my favorite.

Keith all the way. But I have nothing but fondness for all mentioned. Since I had nothing but the major label releases for many years I heard Keith's brillence on Europe '72 compared to T.C. on Live Dead compared to Brent on Go to Heaven for instance. Always liked how Brent would fire Jerry up in concert and someone else has mentioned his organ solos.
I am only talking keyboard playing now....

Brent hands down he could sing his ass off and brought alot of color to the bands sound

The Donna w/Zen Trickster band (can't remember what they are calling it) played a heavier-funkier version of "France" last summer at the Oregon Country Fair. I just heard it on our local Grateful Dead radio show a few weeks back. At the opening, it sounded more like "The Fan" a la Little Feat!! Sit back and imagine that for a second...

I see nothin wrong with that. I happen to like Donna also. Its just when she is not performing well that I cant stand her but that goes with anybody. Like right before the jam in Playin' she sometimes lets out this shriek that just digs at your brain lol. But then there are other times where she screams and it fits perfectly. And whenever she was with JGB she did an excellent job.

Amen! I think it was great to throw that female vibe in there for a while. It really balances the music imho (when singing on key, that is). Oh, but my favorite keyboardist (but least favorite vocalist) is definitely Brent.

1. I love Pigpen wish we could have seen the direction the band would have takin, or continued on had he live longer

2. Brent was awesome loved the B3 allways felt his backing vocals and harmonies were better than him "fronting" a tune

3. Keith great player but like others the Donna factor hurts him

4. TC I just wish there was more of a body of work to truly assess his talent vs. the others. Although he is present during a truly remarkable period so maybe he should rank 3rd

5. Vince not really a fan of his style
