I ran into one at my school for the first time yesterday. it was sum GOTH bitch, wearingall black, with black pants with chains all over them, like 4 rings in her lower lip, black eyeliner all around her eyes and a black walmart steal your face shirt. this pisssed me off alot, but i dont have the nerve to tell people off, i wouldnt be mean as hell, i would have just asked her sum serious questions, but then my friend saw her and he started yelling at her he said, "WHY THE FUCK DO U THINK U CAN WEAR THAT SHIT!! NOT TOO FUCKIN COOL!! U CAN WEAR ALL THE SLIPKNOT SHIRTS U WANT BUT PUT THAT MOTHERFUCKER BACK IN THE CLOSET!!" and she just said "Fuck you!" and walked away and we all laughed our asses off. Guess she was under the impression that the grateful dead is a thrash metal band, thought the name and skull was cool, and then bought the shirt, i see that as being the likely scenarion

Calling out kids like "GOTH bitch" doesnt give you a head-ish appearance, if that's what you're going after. and in the end, why do you care if she is goth? because she's wierd?

Seriously, look at it. Is there anything wierder than a deadhead? goth, maybe. but still, it's like a snake making fun of a slug for not having any arms or legs. I say just drop this thread. I'm sick of hearing about this stuff.

I use to listen to slipknot in high school. That first album was pretty kickass.

I certainly listen to more Grateful Dead than I do anything else though. It's all good things in a all good time my friends.

I haven't given the same amount of thought as you guys seem to have. I press play on my CD player and usually enjoy what I hear.

When i get to know a band I'll buy one of they're shirts if I see it somewhere.

I just dont understand why people feel the need to go for sum kind of fucking image. i dont necessarily want to have a "headish appearance" I dont want to be part of any clique and i hate the idea of them in the first place. i dont hang out with many heads in my school bcuz there rele arent ne, i just hang out with people that i take a liking to. Goths, emos, its all fucking stupid, most of those kids r real fucking insecure and feel like they need to dress a certain way and act a certain way to gain acceptance. most goth kids r real depressed, yea evryones real fucking depressed "existence is suffering," all these jackasses just think that they have more problems than evryone else and need to wear it on the outside to prove it

Alrighty... All I can really say is if you like the Grateful Dead's music and you see somebody with a Grateful Dead shirt on you cannot possibly "deem" him worthy of it. I own 0 Grateful Dead shirts, but i own a lot of their music and posters. So that I myself can look at them and listen to them. Seeing somebody with a shirt of the Greatest Band Ever is telling me one thing. "Go and talk to them and compare/share." No need to claim the band as your own or have a competition (unless both parties would like to have a competition)

High school was the worst place and yet the best place for me to figure out who I was. I will admit the Grateful Dead came to me easily from friends in School, but there are a great many people who just haven't heard their music. It's called ignorance and the only cure is friendship.

In your position I would probably just ask the kid if he is really into the Grateful Dead. If he replies "yes" then have a conversation about it. Teach each other what you don't know. If both of you get enjoyment out of the music you hear when you hold a Grateful Dead CD in your hand then you were born friends.

What? Are you kidding me? First of all half of these new posts havent read my decision that i posted on the second page. Also this is going a little to far into "acceptance" or whatever. So basicly what you and a few other people are saying is that I shouldnt wear dead shirts because i dont think the same way hmmmm.... Also the kids pretending to like the Dead and that pissed me off, THATS ALL. god stop all the preaching, sorry i ever started this stupid thread

That's quite hypocritical, since you are the one who started preaching about who should have the "right" to wear a band T-shirt. I think all anyone is saying to you here is:

I occaissionally got the same kind of treatment in the mid-80's when I would regularly take my long hair and tye-dye shirts into at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago for hardcore punk shows such as Circle Jerks, Black Flag and D.R.I. I'd be surrounded by kids with ripped denim, white-painted black leather, spray-painted mohawks and clothespins thru their lips. But comments or cheap shots in the slam pit were rare; most people would appreciate that I actually appreciated their music, even if I presented my appearance in a different style.

And your point is?! When I was in high school, I was a very hardcore goth punk, down to the dyed black Robert Smith hair and black eyeliner. That didn't mean I couldn't appreciate other music. In fact I've always held that goth is more of a style of dress than a musical genre. As a music it incorporates many different styles. More than anything, what makes a goth band goth is their appearance. I mean look at the difference between 'goth' bands like Lacrimosa and The Cure, or Bauhaus and The Sisters of Mercy. There isn't too much in common there besides the 'look'. Besides, isn't incorporating varied musical styles a hallmark of the Dead or jambands?! And besides, it was listening to goth, as something differnt than the norm that opened my mind to other music, to going off the beaten path as it were to find something that was more interesting to my ear. As others have said here, live and let live. Instead of being immature and judgmental, find out how much a person knows about the Dead, and pass 'em a disc. If they are 'goth', make it a '69 show with a heavy St Stephen>The Eleven jam, or The Other One, or Dark Star. Or one of those dark mid '70s Help>Slip>Frank's. Just a bit of friendly advice brother: grow up, learn that the beauty of life is the difference we all have and accept and learn from it! Peace.

Come on now, my only requirement is that you actully like the music, this kids is an obvious stoner kid that wears the shirt because he smokes. Not because he likes or knows the music its obvious .
