well i think after all im not gunna school him on it. Why? Because if hes that insecure about himself and his "image" that he has to pretend to like a band, i wouldn't feel that great about calling him out, he apperntly has enough problems. thanks for all the answers again! (damn im never going back to ultimate-guitar)

You don't need to "school" this guy. People who want to tout their superiority through knowledge forget the beauty of knowledge and life. SHARING.

Like the song goes, What I want to know, is are you kind?
Images, or posing or whatever is obviously not the way to enjoy being oneself. But giving someone a hard time because they aren't privilaged enough to have "authentic" dead shirts or given the time to listen and enjoy is just like making fun of kids because they are poor, wear alligator shirts, play sports, smoke weed or anything else. Pride and shame are the same thing.

Isn't listening to music more fun with people?

Turn him on to a cool CD of a show. See if he likes it.

Sometimes someone is exploring something. Maybe something in their life is making them look this way. Just maybe they need someone cool to give them a hand.

When I think back, there had to be a day back there somewhere when I came wandering into the scene. Had to be a complete noob. Was probably walking around with an AC\DC shirt or something stupid like that. If I remember right, the first time I got out of a car at a show, the first thing someone did was hug me and say "Welcome Home!"

Then again, if he blows off the CD, then just let em move along.

deadheads are some of the most tasteful people when it comes to music in my opinion. some people go through their entire lives calling people "dirty hippies" and then they have kids and they get into it, they listen to it for the first time and they regret all the shit they caused earlier. believe me, i'm a senior in high school with the longest hair and have 2 shirts that don't display a jam band.

off-topic i know. but still. i agree with marc420. don't try to give this kid a hard time because he's just getting into the dead. give him some shows that really inspire you, maybe he will delve deeper. i know how weird it sounds but it's how i got to know my current group of friends.

be a kind head, give him a break. when people need to quiz a guy for not knowing anything about the band, that's when it starts getting off the topic you started with: the music.

Ah shit - live and let live... do your own thing and worry about your own path.

I'm just glad that there's still a new generation of kids that are getting into the dead - in whatever depth - even a kid just wearing the clothes is still helping to keep it alive - even is such a small way.

Maybe give the kid a bootleg & he'll get into it more.

How about a "nice shirt dude, you like the dead?"

There are no strangers, only friends we haven't met.

It's like that Don Henley song '..I saw a Deadhead sticker on a cadillac'. I never agreed with that sentiment. It's like restricting liking the Dead to a economic standard. I remember when I started to see some of the nice RVs in the lots at Dead shows, I didn't scorn that, I just thought that would be a cool way to tour.

does the description "deadhead" include the parking lot subculture,or the collective conciousness that may or may not occur at dead shows.

Simply being present at a lot scene doesn't mean a thing.

You have to LOVE the music, completely becoming hopelessly lost in for the rest of your life! The light bulb needs to go OFF over your head and then explode! If you don't know if you are a Deadhead or not... my guess is you probably aren't. But that doesn't mean it won't ever happen. For many it takes a few tries and then...WHAM!!

Invite him over to your house and make him sit down and watch a dead vid with you and start singing along and talk dead and have fun, see what he really is all about. then CONVERT HIM TO THE ONLY RELIGION hahahah
