I was in spanish today ( im 15 :o ) and theres a kid who kind of a hipster. You know the people who where the "classic rock" shirts but then turn around and say they looove the flavor of the month band. Well apparently this kids a stoner so apparently he went to the Haight and bought a dead shirt.... Im very tired of hipster stoner kids who think just because they smoke they can wear Bob Marley shirts and Dead shirts. Well my point is whenever i meet kids like this i school them in what ever band they pretend to like, to do this to the dead is unacceptable. What questions can i ask this kid so i can school him? I know alot of Dead trivia but if anyone has any especially tasty/obvious facts i can ask this kid so he never wears that shirt again would be appreciated! Wow long post, thanks

how about converting him to the Dead's music.

Think of yourself as trying to get him on the right path and saving him from the road to perdition

id simply ask him to name the band. if he is as you suspect, he probably won't get any further than Jerry.

or if you prefer to be more of a wiseass you can talk about George's great basslines, Jessica's singing, and Larry on the keys. would be funny to watch him nod in agreement

of course after teasing him you should do what pistol said

Man. I'm in highschool too. Is flaunting your dead knowledge really a sign of authority? i know the kinds of kids your talking about...but still...it bugs me whenever i hear of a deadhead (uncompetative, caring person) start calling out "poser" heads.

on the other hand, since i am about your age Pigpen, and do know what a "poser" head it, i suggest you read some books on the Dead. like "The Dead" by Hank Harrison. It gets really super in depth with the dead, but mostly with they're scene. It was published in 1980, so it's probably out of print, but I have two copies (?)

actually, read any book on the Dead. That kid probably hasnt read any. All of the books give me new knowledge to little known facts about the band. If you're looking for specific stuff, you could ask him if he know's who the original bassist was for the Dead (Dana Morgan Jr.) or what Pigpen and Janis's favourite drink was (Southern comfort, SoCo) or maybe which finger was missing from jerry's hand. everyones gotta know that.

Does it help that the kids a bit of an asshole? :o I have both Hank Harrison books, some of it is pretty cool but alot is his personal opinion. Etc "Pig began to die when Janice did" that among other things is bullshit to me. Thanks again for all the answers, oh ya i have maybe 6 dead books ive re read about 8 times. Good to know theres some young fans thought i was the only one

So nice to see young heads in the forum! The poser thing has been going on since the beginning. Don't sweat it. They're usually on to the next flavor of the month in a few days and at least they were exposed to the Dead. Some convert, others don't. No need to "out" them as fakes. Folks will see through them in time. Just keep listening yourself.
Oh, and not to rain on anything, but Hank Harrison's books are widely considered to be discredited. He had some peripheral connection and used it to try to cash in on the boys. I think his step-daughter is Courtney Love(!) Stick to some of the other Dead books, like Phil's book and anything by Blair Jackson. They're much more credible.

thats funny, you've got problems with too much "deadheads", i'm 16 and live in germany and i swear that i havent met one single person who even knows the name grateful dead :(

Although it is more about the pranksters and Tom Wolfe probably isn't above creative embellishing, you should read 'The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test'.
I know the Pigpen/Janis comment would gag me but, you know, just ask him if you can have the shirt once he moves on to the new flavor of the month!

Close! Kind people like to shake their bones, but "head" implies an addiction (a la acid head, speed head). Plus, I don't think the flavor of the month guy like to shake his bones.

Luckily i never have to deal with that shit at my school, what i have to deal with alot more are the poser fags with the dark side of the moon shirts, and it would b ok if it was a couple poser fags, but its like evry white dude at my school. But if i ever see some preppy dude walk by me in a walmart steal your face shirt, i might be tempted to call him out on it. Also i hate all the stupidass kids that walk around in the hallways talking about how trashed they got and how much pot they smoked this weekend and the stupid shit they did, because it gives all the people who use responsibly (not very many on the high school scene) a bad reputation.

I like the way you think young squire. I feel the same way. Ask your friend about Wharf Rat. Quiz him on who sings what song Bobbie or Jerry. Ask him to name Ask him to name 4 out of 6 of the Dead Keyboardists. That'll learn em.
