The Deadheads are originals...greats...people in which many others wouldn't look up to but I do...because I admire what they did for the Grateful Dead and their music. I am a huge fan...as huge as I can be for 19 years old. I'm not a fair weather fan who loves truckin and sugar and they say they are fans...It's hard for me to really express my love for the dead because I can never consider myself a deadhead since I was born in 87...and could have only seen a few years while i was ages 0-7 or so. I cannot call myself a deadhead, and I don't know if other younger people have this problem who haven't seen the dead live. I saw "The dead" in 03-04, but I don;t consider that head status.
My new sect of heads consisists of the following"
Neo-Dead Head n.- (nee oh ded hed)- A Grateful Dead follower that could not physically attend shows, but who mentally travels through the tours through consecutive dead sets (cdr, mp3, flacc, etc.) I'm 1...

Although I believe it's not necessary. You're just a head who hasn't seen the grateful dead live. I tend to think being a dead head is more about how you feel about the music; a state of your own feeling of kinship with the music and musical approach.

No need to set yourself apart from the rest of us older dolts who've seen them live, pre-jerry's passing.

im only 16, and i feel where you're coming from. you shouldnt worry, because other true deadheads will accept you. the dead heads arent a really tight clique. i was hanging out with an older head last night, and we were both suprised at how much we knew about the dead and other bands of the sort.

and i know what you mean about all the kids who listen to Truckin' and think they're complete heads, and rub it in your face.

and Ann Coulter is not a deadhead. she always blasts Al Franken, because people think he's a deadhead. She says stuff along the lines of "he isnt a deadhead, he just says he is so liberal scum will like him" alright if you are a true head, and you say that about a person who was backstage at many many dead shows and friends with the band...then i would have to question your headiness.

plus Coulter is just mean. but please, please no one else talk about her. We already had a debate on here that was carried on for too long.

im 15 and i go to as many Bob Weir, Phil Lesh and DSO shows as i possibly can. You dont even need that just honostly liking the music is more then good enough . I actully have met a few Dead posers in the last couple months but you can tell pretty quickly.

nice to know i have some young company here, just 20 myself. like the rest of you, i was unable to see a real GD show but at least ive seen and greatly enjoyed TOO, The Dead, Ratdog, Phil.

instead of neo-dead heads, might i suggest another name for us young heads without even a touch of grey: good looking deadheads

Interesting thread. I am an old head, logged 300+ shows including seeing every show in '85 (but New years, got shut out of that one) and whole Europe tours and such. I would consider all of you deadheads. I never saw Hendrix, but I'm totally into him and could tell you all kinds of facts and stats on him. Heads can tell the difference between posers and real people. I remember when In the Dark came out and people were screaming for "Hell in a Bucket!" We called them "In the Dark Heads". Some got on the bus, some didn't. You folks are surely on the bus. Don't sweat it.

A deadhead to me is somebody who loves the music; simple as that. They don't have to be a a certain gender, race, or of similar lifestyles. Neither doees concert attendance count. It's all about the music.

If someone comes up to you and hears you say something about the Dead or sees a CD or the like and says "Are you a Deadhead?" And you just say Yes, I would consider you one. I've encountered smurks and the drugs comments as recently as last month. 'Cause it's not always a friendly time or place for it, you know?

I've known many devout Deadheads that were never inside a show, and also folks who were lucky/old enough to have attended dozens of shows but seemed there for the party rather than the music and/or acted irresponsibly or with disregard for the music, whom I would think twice before calling a "Deadhead".

Attendance is not a prerequisite, say I. Appreciation is.

i am also what you are calling a "Neo dead head" Born in early'92. I have gone to a further fest and gathered a sizeable tape colection. I Know one of the local cover bands and they hook me up With lots of tapes and stuff. It is it a little weird when i find people with a SYF on a tee shirt or a bumper sticker and have never even heard of the dead.

People buy clothes without thinking. I read an article in the local paper about some confrontations in local schools about symbols on clothing, etc... folks don't know what the symbols mean anyhow.

Tiger, remember a little while back when there was a big discussion about music vs partying, the differences between getting high and getting too fucked up to enjoy the music, and the breakup of Phish? To a certain extent, this is what gives us the bad image of knowing nothing about music and/or just being interested in how it feels. This forum proves that is a lot of crap (I don't often post in non-taper music sections because I am new to guitar).

Again, for me, touchheads are the ultimate in worst fake heads. I saw the (cheesy) music video for "Touch" on YouTube, and some folks kindly shared their opinions about it being the best song (or even only good song) by the Dead.

Can't say I consider myself less of a head for having never seen the Dead live. After all, it's not my fault! It's more a state of mind, and thinking the magic years are over will knock you out of things yet to come.
