Then do vocals only and get a package like they sell at guitar center. The Yamaha ones are nice for the $$$

hi there,

first, you generally do not need to put mics on the guitar amps (or keys, etc) because the amps are loud enough. so you are only amplifying the vocals.

there are 2 ways to amplify vocals - either thru a powered mixer into passive speakers, or thru a passive mixer into powered speakers (but much heavier speakers and a little more awkward to use). i've been in a band for 5 years and we chose the first method (as does almost every other band i know).

so, pick up a powered "box mixer" (aka powered head). i suggest that you get a few more inputs than you currently need so you can add singers or other stuff later if you need to - 8 inputs is a good size. the mixer should have both XLR and 1/4" inputs, as well as onboard effects like reverb, compression, etc. also, some mixers have the ability to pan channels left and right to create a stereo image - not required but a nice feature if available.

check out www.musiciansfriend.com for a good selection and prices. hope this helps,

tcm

If you can spare the money, build the practice PA with pieces that you can incorporate into your over all PA system at a later date.

When I put together my practice PA, I bought a passive rack mounted mixer, power amp, full octave EQ and floor wedges.

Once we were out playing, this became our monitor mix and everyone in the band knew how to tweak it.

If you are on a tight budget, I would go with whatever you can get your hands on..
