Hey y'all,

I was just wondering if you have favorite shows that you have used to turn non Deadheads on to the boys. I have my fave shows obviously, but I think alot of the times the faves of those of us in the know aren't always the best for newbies, a little to esoteric at times, if that makes sense.

I just started dating this girl who knows nothing about the Dead, and I'd like to give her a good show to give her an idea of the band. She's really into goth, so I was thinking one of those mid-70's shows with one of those really dark help>slip>frank's monstrosities. Any ideas? Or maybe just shows that have worked for you in the past. Thanks....

6/18/74 is a fantastic show and probably has the best Eyes there is.

6/18 Eyes?

It's superior to most non-73-or-74 Eyes', but imho a pretty standard one compared to many others of that great era. Check out 10/19/74 or 8/6/74 and be totally blown away.

However, as far as the 6/18 Let It Grow> Jam> It's a Sin, that is some amazing stuff! Great show.

If you can get a copy of 5/15/70 your friends may be into the Dead for the rest of their lives.

I've had this problem too, and have decided the best way to turn introduce a noob to the Dead is by making a compilation best suited for that individual. I recently put together a CD of easy listening grateful dead from various live releases (and 1 studio track) with the following tracks:

3. Jack Straw - Europe '72
4. China Cat - Europe '72
5. I Know You Rider Europe '72
6. Sugar Magnolia Europe'72

9. Goin' Down the Road/NFA - Skullfuck
10. Me and Bobby McGee - Skullfuck
11. Crazy Fingers - 6/14/76
12. Dark Hollow - Reckoning
13. Ripple - Reckoning

I thought these were a good mix for a first timer, and represent a good variety of he band's sound. I tried to add in a few songs with some extended jams (Bird Song and Crazy Fingers), but pretty much just wanted to present some polished GD as a general introduction to the band.

I used to be all about finding "Newbie friendly" versions of Dead tunes to turn on newcomers but lately my attitude is "Throw on DP2 10-31-71, and if they don't get it, the hell with 'em".

5/25/77 great version of the Other One>Wharf Rat. there's a hint of a slipknot tease by jerry in this other one. also, jerrys solo at the end of this wharf rat will get any gothic off. good luck
