I can't get enough of 'Eyes of the World,' particularly DP12 ( '74 June 26/28 ).... just wondering if there are any versions that compare? List your favorite(s)....

73-74 Eyes cannot be beat.It's just not possible.

My most favored Eyeses:

1. 10/19/74 Jerry burns the jam to the ground!! Widely experienced in The_Grateful_Dead_Movie, and imho clearly the best ever.
2. 8/6/74 Billy at his most magnificent
3. 7/19/74 Keith's b-day, a crispy high-energy version, with a really huge Phil solo in the jam.
4. 6/24/73 dunno why I have such a soft spot for the version in this lesser-known show, of which only one disc worth of recording exists; the Eyes jam veers crazily off the road but rights itself in the most miraculous fashion, courtesy of Phil's intuitive genius.
5. 2/9/73 the very first one has a certain energy to it that was never repeated.
6. 2/15/73 the transition out of Dark Star became a common spot for Eyes to emerge during this era, but the segue on this date is particularly intricate, like the movement of a fine Swiss watch.


other faves: 2/27/81 one of the fastest of the hyperspace, Star Wars-era Eyeses, yet Jerry flows serenely over the top of it... 9/12/81, 6/30/87, 8/4/89 ...

6-9-76, 6-11-76. and you thought your heard Jazzy vesions? Try these two out.
5-9-77. Starts out like a jack rabbit on crack and never lets up. Most '77 versions are pretty good.
3-13-82...beautiful.
7-18-89 Alpine,,,like a runaway freight train.
6-17-91 Pure joyous opener.
New Years '90 or '91, can't remember, but such a seamless/magical transition from NFA it makes ya wonder why they didn't do it more often.

And of course 3-29-90 with Branford Marsalis.

You can find a full version on the "So Many Roads" box set but the transition into and song "China Doll" are cut. The version on the GD movie soundtrack has "China Doll" but a portion of "Eyes" is edited out for some stupid reason. Of course the version on the Movie itself is chopped up during the best parts with all that backstage footage. Go figure.

Wow, Tigerstrat, I checked out that Eyes from 2/27/81...you weren't kidding, it's warp speed! I think I'd have a hard time playing it at that speed!

good topic. actually my all-time favortie Dead song, (live/studio) out of all the versions and songs i've heard in my time as a Head, the Eyes of the World from Dicks Picks 14 is the one. something about it moves me every time, no matter how many times i hear it, it's still magic.

I don't think the actual released recording is cool to copy, but that it's fine to copy bootleg recordings that circulated before the performance got featured on an official release. Seems like many of the DP's that have come out over the last several years were already at least partially in my collection. Should I throw my old boots out because they are no longer "legit"? Hell no...
