I'm picturing poorly intonated and impossible to play instruments... but they do get you on CNN's website so I guess that counts for something.

Weird, for sure "home made" I like "custom built" better! Brian May's guitar is sweet. Does anybody know if that is the original one that he plays today. It would seem unlikely after all these years that onstage with Grohl is the same one he built when he was young. I guess its possible, just seems a little far fetched considering the amount of playing it got. I think of Willie's "Trigger" martin and think what a guitar looks like after that many years of touring.

Brian May is very astute at guitar building and electronics. He built his first guitar with his Fathers help.
May is also the inventor of a treble booster that slams the fron end of tube amps harder for his signature sound.
Also he is a wiring freak with a ton of series/parallel/ out of phase pickup options on his guitar.

My Brother and I have just been fixing up Squire Strats with maybe a pickup or three and might be a new bridge, pots and switch and jack and tuners.....damn that's almost the whole thing, ain't it. Just find one that's got a good neck, mine are both Mexican ones, and they play nice(once ya screw the Gibson pickups into them.)
I'm gonna try to make one some day if I can ever learn the skills. How do you make a neck? Big respect to those that can.
