Not dead related but I have to tell you all to check out a dude out of Nashville named Johnny Hiland.

He played our place last night with Hal Ketchum. I had heard about him and my partner kept telling me to check him out on you tube because he was so freaking hot. I didn't want to see anything before hand so I could just absorb it live.
He comes out during sound check and does a song he wrote "Until we meet again" and about halfway through I had tears in my eyes. He was just burning it down....I can't say enough about him except that if he comes anywhere near you DON"T MISS HIM>.....His playing is off the hook

Yeah, I've seen him in guitar magazines and heard little bits of him playing. He can tear it up for sure - doesn't look like he gets cheated at dinner time either My bluegrass band opened for Hal Ketchum many moons ago - his bass player at the time was from Roanoke and went to highschool with my Dead band's old lead singer.

My vote would go to my late friend Bob Lansing who I worked with at the music store I managed back in the early 90s. He got probably his most notoriety playing guitar for the Dickies - most famous for the soundtrack to the cult movie Killer Klown from Outer Space (also a cover of the Banana Splits theme that was somewhat of a hit) but man this guy had chops that never ended. Took jazz guitar lessons from Joe Pass as a kid. He could play anything, any style, and do it all well. Had a razor sharp wit to boot. I think the Dickies' MTV video from Killer Klowns is still out there - if you can get into it here's a facebook video from a couple of years ago.

He has been around awhile but he's not so well known.....
His live in Europe CD is just about my fav 'live' blues recording.

That guy can really play! I am surprised that I've never heard of him.

I used to go see Danny Gatton in DC when I was in high school, saw the Dregs a few times too - Bobby Lee Rogers I had not heard of . . . checking him out now.

how about Boomer Castleman. This guy is incredible! He invented a bender for his guitars that is really unique! Its called the Bigsby Palm pedal. search him out! I had the pleasure of jamming with him a few weeks ago and I really felt that what I had achieved as a guitarist was really not much to speak of.

I am very familiar with Johnny Hiland. On the side for the last year or so I have been tutoring myself on Chicken picking (no where near good enough to try it live yet though) and I have acquired some Johnny Hiland DVD's where he teaches his technique. He is ridiculous, and most of the time that I put his DVD on to learn something, I end up quitting guitar for the rest of the week!

Got everything he ever recorded, plus a few great boots. Sick player who turned down requests form both Roger Waters and Clapton to tour with them. Died way too young.

I hear you Jeff, it's one thing to listen to someone to get inspired to play it's another to listen to someone to get inspired to lean your guitar against the wall and throw rocks at it.
Buster B. "Brad" Jones was one of those guys too. A Roanoke native and used to teach guitar there.
