That is classic.
"a jazz musician dies and goes to heaven. At the gates he is greeted by St. Peter who lets him in and shows him around. Down a street of gold he hears some familiar drumming. He turns to St. Peter and says, "that's Buddy Rich! I'd know that playing anywhere.' St. Peter responds, 'No, that's God, he only THINKS he's Buddy Rich."

I have that and some funny out takes from the Troggs arguing about recording a tune, Casey Casem flipping out about a transition, Col. Sanders, Dean Martin & Jerry Lewis, Lee Elia (Cubs Manager), and a few others.

Ray Charles was also known for going off like that. He did a recording here with the Roanoke Symphony and a friend of mine who was with the symphony said that he spent about 15 minutes cussing them out. Zappa is another who used to get pretty uptight like that

I saw Van Morrision throw a coniption fit at his Sax player live on stage at a show here in Portland a few years back.
How embaaaaarasing. He was so pissed off for some reason.

On the Buddy Rich thing... Didn't Jerry say the same thing to Bobby before every gig?... "If I here one clam... you're... off the bus".

I've heard stories about Van Morrison before - he has quite a temper

Chuck Berry is another - man I wish there was some video of he and Keith Richards taking swings at each other at the Rock-n-Roll Circus shoot. Our bass player was working with Otis Rush and an opportunity to play behind Berry came up one of the other guys in the band warned him off as he randomly changes keys on tunes and doesn't tell anyone what he's about to play and was a general a-hole . . . but he did write Johnny B. Goode and Promised Land among others

One of my old professors used to play drums for Chuck whenver he hit.... Cincinatti? Cleveland? I forget. Anyway, his stories were pretty good. During rehearsal the instruction was that Chuck stomping his feet meant to hit a stop. At the show he learned that Chuck stomps his feet constantly and only some of them were cues. Somehow he figured out which stomps were which after a few icy glares.

I also heard Bruce Sprinsteen do an interview talking about E-Street backing Berry at a show. He met him back stage and said "Mr. Berry, we're excited to play with you, do you know what you want to play?" He replied, "we're gonna play Chuck Berry tunes." Walked out on stage and "1, 2, 3, 4" and kicked into a tune with no notice - gotta love it.

One of my only claims to fame is being in Chuck Berry's backup band for a gig in CT. Why was I lucky enough to be invited? (lucky is a debatable term in hindsight) ..... Answer: Because I was available on a moments notice as he fired the WHOLE original backup band during soundcheck.
Ive threatened to tell the story of this night on here before , and I will, it is just going to take time to type it up right, because there is A LOT to tell.
I even have some low quality audio and video!

and to add a Dead topic, Bobby Weir has quite the temper. He kicked a hole through Jay Lane's kick drum for a tempo transgression a few years ago. Not a pretty sight.

Also, Chuck Berry is the original "Show me the Money" dude. If he don't get what he asks for up front in cash (often he adds $$$ to the previously negotiated price without notice) given to him personally I hear he won't play.

Something has to pay for all that hidden video equipment he likes to hide in ladies bathrooms.

bodiddley - since it's your username - some of the guys I play with served as Bo Diddley's backup band for a gig in Roanoke back in the 80s or early 90s. Bo was a little gruff with the band especially the bass player. After the show Bo charged folks $5 for an autograph, including my band mate who stood in line with his strat, a key, and $5 and Bo scratched his name in the guitar with the key and took the $5. Wasn't an a-hole or anything just pretty funny.

Ya, all the interviews I've read of him paint him as a tad eccentric.
