Does anyone know what effects or combination of effects Jer uses in the middle PITB jam. In many of the 70's versions he gets this spacey-underwater sound that I love.

I might be wrong here but isn't that just a Wha wha pedal?

nope not a wha wha pedal, it was a WAH WAH pedal..... (JK)

I believe early 70s versions do have the wah wah, i know he transitioned away from the vox and/or colour sound wah right around the hiatus....not sure what he employed after that. Phase 100 can get pretty watery on some settings...

I'd agree probably the band's most outstanding studio work.
That said the version in "The move" is awesome too! I love when they emerge from jam with hook, resolving in D and a big boot stomp from Garcia.
Never gets old.

Ironic that the most really representative piece of music the Dead ever put down in the studio (meaning a studio track that actually sounded like they did live) was not even a Grateful Dead album!

He was still using the Wah pedal on PITB into the 80's. Same with GSET.

Don't want to hijck this thread but...can anyone explain the change...musically...that they go into in the jam. It takes on a very different tone and feel...just like the jam section in Bird Song...is this jsut a modal shift???

yeah man .... the whole album is sweet .... well almost .... Walk in the Sunshine

After the chorus the riff they play goes from a D Major to, on some versions (Hundred Year Hall), a similar riff in D Dorian....but all it really does is go from D major to D minor.

When they are going back into the song from the space jam, they play the D Dorian riff and switch it back to the D major riff. I can tab it out when I get home.

Same sound as the Candyman solo in 5/82. I have a hard time believing that is just a Wah.

The jam also feels different rhythmically. Throughout the song it's a 10-count rhythm (10/4 time signature?), and the 9 and 10 get emphasized beats during the main part of the song (such as when they go to A at the end of each line in the main verse). The jam loses that emphasis, so there's no real way to know where the 10 beat is. That gives it a free-form feeling.

I may not be saying this just right, so corrections are welcome.

What's has worked for me playing bass on the jam is playing the intro progression and improvising from that idea:

(D) / / / / - / / (C) / / - (G) / (A) / (REPEAT)

D on the 1-6 beats, C on the 7th and 8th beats, G on the ninth beat, and resolve back to D with the A7 tones on the 10th beat.

I play my lines off of that idea by playing notes that suggest that progression but that often come back to the D on the "one" beat.

To date this has been my best approach to this jam and it seems to work and allow the guitar players to explore their modes and do whatever they do.

The hardest part for me is the segue back to the tune.

"Walk in the Sunshine" is a fun song, jerk!

Regarding the jam, we strive for the following:
Focus on Dsus2 but tease in the Dm, Dmaj, Dsus4
Drummer keep the 10 count
Bass keep the 10 count
Rhythm/keys play to the 10 count
Accents should go from super subtle to medium.
More dominant accents when we are ready wrap it up
