It is said that Bobweir;s mirror often got covered with a crazy white powder, that could only be cleaned off with a rolled up piece of currency inserted in one's nose, but that does not happen with our modern gong.

and then UC Santa Cruz for a couple of years in early 80s before dropping out, and having a comedy writing partner who was a Deadhead, I basically was surrounded by the culture for a chunk of years. While I enjoy their music, I was by no means that into it. I needed quiet dark places to hallucinate. (think john lilly.) However, going to a handful of concerts and watching the dynamics of the band and fans, I always found it tremendously amusing the respect for Mr. Garcia and the tolerance of Mr. Weir by most fans. So I thought I would honor Mr. Weir to some degree, and while I miss some elements of those slower stoned times, there is enough I don't miss. But how could one describe it really. Documentary films or similar can't. I thought despite the easy parody that the images provide, if you were a kid now, that time is as foreign as World War Two was to me in the 70s. So I thought why not describe it as if I was describing something really ancient, although it isn't. The gong itself has a splash and crash to it, and hangs around, which I thought was also a bit like the parking areas for the concerts as well. But other than that, nothing too deep. Just me having fun. Thanks for asking.

This was the response from the seller of the gong. I am now left more confused than ever! He seems like a funny dude.. I guess you were right the thing looks like Bobs current mustash.

Firstly, that was a cool response, IMO. Secondly, "the respect for Mr. Garcia and the tolerance of Mr. Weir by most fans" is a sad but all too true statement.
