Bands doing non-jazz collective improvisation

I'm wondering if anyone knows of bands out there currently that are doing non-jazz improv. I'm part of a regular situation right now at a local open mic/jam where we're doing a lot of really cool collective improvisation stuff, yet distinctly non-jazz and distinctly non-dead (although I tend to bring a lot of Weir-ish stuff to the table!). It's more of a rock style (lots of heavy distorted guitar and textural, ambient, delay kind of stuff from the other two guitarists) yet hard for me to put my finger on lol. It's very cool although we fail miserably more than I would like! But I'm thinking, there must be other people out there doing similar stuff outside of the jazz style! Anyone know of any bands or artists like this?

Hey Jack check out this link.

They are playing here tonight and I am trying to get "her" to go. I thought they looked like just what you are describing and I was intrigued. There is a video clip on the page where you can see them play. If I catch the show I'll report back.
