Movie Time!

The July 7th 1989 JFK show in Philly is now on film. Crimson, White, and Indigo will be screening at some local theaters.

I was at that show. Will either go see it or get the DVD when it comes out

Weirdest show of my time. I didn't know about or see Hornsby. Left work w/ a change of clothes (ties didn't work at Dead concerts) from just north of Philly @ a bit before 5 and headed to the show. Was supposed to meet my buds there, near the sound board. Looked for 'em but couldn't find them. Spent the show alone only to find out they were, let us say... indisposed and probs couldn't have found me anyway in the elevated plane they were in. Soz, I spent the concert by myself near a hippie chick with miniature chimes, as in wind type that she was "playing" through the entire show. I do remember that. I also remember Brent's wailing on "Blow Away". End of the first set, iirc. Strange trip indeed. Noone even offered me any "solace". Must be my karma.

And yet, I am still "on the bus".

BTW, go see the movie or purchase the CD. The community exists and still reigns king and confounds the music industry to this date... as far as I can tell !!!

Nice pic Grateful Dad! That is actually not far from where I was sitting with my then GF/now wife, an old friend from college and his brother. We were probably a section or two to the left and maybe 15 rows closer. As I recall, the sound wasn't great from there. I was never sure why they held that concert there, wasn't there some controversy before the show over whether the stadium was actually condemned or not?

It feels strange that that show was almost 21 years ago, it doesn't seem that long. And the fact that at the time, I was a grown-up working a job that used my major from college (as opposed to the bogus job I worked when I first got out of school), makes me think my youth really is behind me.

This was one of my favorite shows I ever saw. Highlight for me was Scarlet into Fire, especially when Brent starts to follow Jerry's repeating lines.

That whole summer '89 tour rocked. And the Alpine run was terrific too, so I'm glad there are now three DVD releases from that tour (including Buffalo and Alpine and now Philly).

man, I missed all sorts of peps that show. Past, present and future ones.

I think noone recognized me as I was a pretty corporate looking twerb back then . I didn't grow my hair long again till 5 years later.

As far as JFK itself, I remember hearing that same controversy. I kinda thought it had been condemned but it was done after the show had been scheduled and sold. If it hadn't already been condemned, it should have. Toilets torn up from the floor, sinks ripped out of walls. Complete trashing of the place. As we know it was the last event at JFK and iirc the demolition started not too long after that show. But it was 20+ years ago and my memory starts to fail me nowadays.

I liked these shows as well, but the idea of going to a movie theatre to watch the boys makes me giggle. I was a hall dancer type of head and I can't see dancing in the aisles of the movie theatre nor can I see sitting still for 2+hours watching. I will however, be buying the DVD as then I can dance around the house and do whatever else whilst it plays on the big screen.

I actually checked it out last night... lots of fun with a bunch of kind folks, and the film is very good. Not the greatest show ever, but lots of very good shots of Jer's playing. Also, not a lot of special f/x messing up the clear pic of the boys playing as there have been in some of the other releases.

Saw it last night myself, though the "Reader's Digest Abridged Edition" (skipped Fire, drums/space) cause I had to get up for work this morning.

I think Chuckles nailed the review. I really enjoyed it. Jerry's singing is INCREDIBLE and his guitar playing is in fine form too. I'm not a huge Weir-Lovelight fan as that's Pigs for ever as far as I'm concerned. Good show though. Jerry's enjoying himself and really like to interact with Brent. A joy to see.

Brent's playing is at his usual high level.

The only negative was when I opened the accompanying booklet there was a photo or two of Weir in his "Daisy Duke's" which I've come to expect, but there was PHIL in shorts too! OMG, I turned away in horror. LOL Phil was in ultra nerd mode at this time. The t-shirt tucked into his sweatpants on the DVD was a look for sure. LOL He sure sounds good though! His playing in The Other One is phenominal and he sings Box Of Rain the best I think I've ever hear him....EXCELLENT!

I did not see this show, I did see Mecca in spring and Alpine that summer. I bought the CD/DVD yesterday and watched the first set. Very good Bucket, I like ROR and Bobby feeling it for Memphis Blues. Brent was really goin off for Blow Away, it did seem like the boys were ready for it to end though. Second Set tonight. I couldnt resist listening to the CD in the van this morning, Great BOR! I wonder though, why they keep relaseing similar DVDs? I would love some variety. I waiting for Soldier 95! Lemieux has said they have it in great quality and its on the list of maybes but you never can tell. Enjoy!

My guess is the quality of the performances. '89 was a strong year. Jerry is very ON, both guitar and vocals. For me it's a pleasure to watch.

Again, for me, the 90s' not so much. But that's just me talkin'.

Vince's placement in the Dead has always been a mystery to me. He seems to stick out like sore thumb. Many of his keyboard sounds make my skin crawl. Just not a big fan here. I saw them in 94 and to slightly modify the old Elvis addage, "the Vibe has left the building.

I firmly believe that when Brent died it took the starch out of Jerry's socks. I mean look at his interactions with Brent in the DVD. BIG smiles and that goes for pretty much all the Brent era DVD avaliable. He seemed to REALLY like Brent.

The JGB in 90s seemed much more vital than the the Dead and to me Jerry seemed MUCH more into JGB at that point too.

What ever way you shake it, thank (diety of your choice) that we've got this film avaliable to us. THANK YOU GD!!!!!
