Hey y'all... I know this is a simple question for the gurus. I just "came into" a 5 watt tube amp! Yeah! I also came into a Weber Cali 12! Another yeah! I want to install the Cali in my Fender 1 x 12 combo and be able to use that as a cabinet (but not completely disconnect it from the combo head). I was just going to get a 1/4" input jack and jack plate from AllParts.com or someplace like that. So my question is... Do I need to also wire in a mechanical switch to change between using the external or internal input sources?

If it were me, I'd go simple: speaker > cable > 1/4" male jack

Then plug the speaker into the combo or 5W depending and eliminate switching, an extra speaker cable, etc.

I'm just a little thick this early in the day. : ) I get what you are saying. Just jack either the combo or 5w into it (manually).

attach a speaker cable to the speaker and give yourself about 2 feet.
At the end of the cable put a 1/4" male jack

plug that into either your combo or head

My understanding of the reason to plug a speaker into one amp or the other but not both, is that the speaker's resistive load would be shared by both amps- when you hit a loud note on one amp, the other amp will be momentarily without it's proper speaker load.(..?) Now waiting for the experts to step in and fix what I just said!

That said, I believe Radial makes a switch pedal that facilitates one speaker switched between two amps- the HeadBone.

And that is without having the combo powered on... just using it as a cab (but obviously wired to the combo head)? I guess I won't take any chances and just
disconnect it from the head before utilizing it as just a cab for the 5 watt. Thanks SS and TS!

Dude, maybe I'm confused here is what I thought you wanted to do:

Application A: combo amp + combo speaker
Application B: 5w amp + combo speaker

Assuming with band for A and at home for B.

But now TS is talking about switching like say mid song?

Which is it?

SS... You did not misunderstand. You got it exactly correct. No offense, TS, but I think you misunderstood. And I am just going to wire in a 1/4" female input connector to the speaker and (manually) switch between combo and 5 watt. Not to be used simulaneously. : )
