I Know You Rider

Hello,
I can't seem to find some tabs on the I Know you Rider that the dead play out of China Cat. All I can find is the Key of G acoustic verson they played in the early 70's. Any help out there on the electrified approach with those sweet runs they play in the beginning?

Use the "code" option. Also added the G in the last line.

thanks for pointing that out for folks strummin, but I also have to point out that the tab for I Know You Rider is still on the list.

I always played an Em instead of G during the "rolling in your arms" part. Is that incorrect? Is it really G? Is it an Em in Morning Dew?

It can be both. Em is the relative minor of G.
Hmmm, come to think of it, I hardly ever play that G. I do a little chromatic run of C C# D.

So what you guys are telling me, is that the electric approach is the same key as the acoustic approach, just the chords are played in other positions than the first and strummed differently for the electric version? Is there any tab for some of the guitar runs that the Dead play from the end of the transition from China Cat to the first verse of Rider? Thanks

Amy, (I'm sure you know this already) relative minors sound extremely similar but they are different. Take G > Em for example:
G = G B D
Em = E G B
What does this do to your sound? In reality, relative minors do sound different if you listen carefully but if you are passively listening, it is more of a mood difference.
Very similar to how a sus4 sounds very similar to the 4th. For this think of the intro to Bertha. Many people play it G G G G C C C G. But in reality it is G G G G Gsus4 Gsus4 Gsus4 G.
IKYR definately has a G there while Morning Dew is definately an Em. Think of the mood difference to the songs!

sus4 and the major of the 4 are complimentary and can be used safely.
So one guitarist can play an A, the other plays an Esus4 and it will sound so similar but cooler.
Very similar to a maj7 and it's natural iii. For this think Eyes. One guitarist can play Emaj7 while the other one (in an accenting way) play Abm. Then both of ya go for the Abm for the nice hook!
Then back to the Emaj7 for the both of ya.

Try a sheet music book called "Grateful Dead Authentic Guitar Classics Vol.2"
I has a nice, complete tab of Rider in the key of D.

i cant tell you everything the dead did with this song, but heres a little riff i usually play with during Rider.
