I am starting a jam band and recorded our second practice with the drummer and first with this bass player. We are probably going to use another bass player but this will give you some ideas. I am still struggling finding my vocal range and some of my guitar solos were a little spazzy, but i would love any and all comments.

Didn't listen to all of it, but I really appreciated the effort on Take 5.

Second guitar seems to be a little too... uh... thrash (?) for my taste.

Focus on dynamics, man... the talent is there.

Stormy Monday:
Dug the vocals but your singer needs to sing from his gut more - bit too much throat singing
Y'all have to work on the chord progressions - incorrect on the walk up and down
Missing proper slides and accents

Whipping Post:
Wrong timing on the 2nd progresion- it should be 123 123 123 12
Again dug the vocals but he's singing from the throat and losing out on all the feeling this songs which is why he can't sing "TIED!" and really without that the song kinda doesn't make much sense?!

First, I do appreciate the comments and i dont think you are being harsh at all. I really respect the majority of all the folks who post on this board and thats why i put practices and half done things up here. You guys are the best sounding boards.

Throat singing vs. Gut singing. I dont even know what that means, but i have invested in some vocal lessons and i will definitely find out.

On Stormy Monday the walk up is G-Am-Bm-Bbm-Am-C right? That is the way the Allmans play it i am pretty sure. How do you guys play that part?

Not sure of the chord degree but Minor 7ths I think would sound better and for the C i do a chord i dont know and then a C minor thing ....Live @ Fillmore version ...
Been awhile

I listened to some of it, I think that you guys should really work on playing together as much as possible. Find the players who will be there all the time and work on timing and levels. I like the Allman jams they are a great place for a new band to start. I would not try to sing the Police at this point, Sting is a great singer and he has a very unique voice. Try to pick open ended tunes to jam on, then work on vocals when the jams tighten up. Good start though. Just 2 cents.

You are right, they are all 7ths. I think it probably gets muddied up because we are playing the same chords. So the C is a Cm7.... we definitely werent doing that right.

Gonna have to google the singing thing. It's a real eye-opening thing once you get it down and you'll wonder how you ever got along without that skill! Bobby and Brent where great with singing from the gut which gave them both very soulful voices! Not knocking Jerry just different styles.

If I want to try to conceptualize it think of the most soulful sung part of a song with huge depth - that's gut. No imagine just speaking those words - that's throat.

That's not the way ABB ever plays it. But don't feel bad, I played it wrong for years along with the chorus ending for BIODTL which I'm guessin half the board does too without realizing it and most won't go back to even see cuz they are convinced.

It goes: G Am7 Bm7 Bbm7 Am7 G#maj7

The first line of the verse goes: 1 2 3 4 (got the timing in your head?)
1 = G
2 = partial chord slide to the A
3 = G
4 = rest

I thought vocals sounded great.....
Sounds like you are close ....the two guitar guys prob mixed it up when comping the tune so dont have the two gits doing the same thing ....
I'm not sure about the Cm7 ..... I did it more C minor ..... and there we did it with another chord ....

You are absoloutely right, levels and timing wasnt there. Bass wasnt either. I agree on the Sting comment. I cant really sing it and faking it leaves lots of pitch issues. There are some hot jams in all the clams tho.

first off, I play it like strummin' :G#maj7,

but I think everyone understands why they hear the Cmin there? The Cmin and G#maj7 share the following chord tones: G, C, Eb

G#maj7th:
G= maj 7th
C= 3rd
Eb=5th



Cmin:
G =5th
C= root
Eb= 3rd (minor)


No wonder people are hearing the Cmin there and actually If you leave the root off the bottom of both chords playing in the 4th (gmaj7) and 3rd (cmin) positions, they are EXACTLY the same.
