Maybe omnidirectional isn't exactly the right word, however, I'm still looking to solve a key issue to my sound.

I get a great late 70's Weir sound, however, one can only hear it if they're standing directly in line with the amp. Move a little left or right and lots of the sound is lost. I have a crystalline glassy sound which contains lots of highs. They just don't disperse at all - they only go straight ahead.

Right now I have two mostly open-backed 1x12 speaker cabs. Each has an EVM-12L. I place one cab stacked on the other which I guess gives me a little more up/down dispersion, but not much. Maybe a 4x10 cabinet would be better as EV did make an EVM-10L.

I just don't know how to solve this issue. Looking for ideas...

1. Maybe angle the cabs a little?

2. I don't mike my amp often, but when I do it seems the highs get out there.

Maybe build something like the angled cab weir used in the late 80s? Maybe 15 or 20 degrees on each side?



Something else just occurred to me, looking at that photo, where all four speakers are mic'd up. Was he running stereo for his effects?

Front load your speakers. Try everything else after that.

Does that mean get the speakers so they are even with the front edge of the cab as opposed to slightly recessed? If so, how? Are there cabinets that do this? How would I protect the speaker in transit?

I'll answer this if you send me that tech spec you have on the Ibanez UE700 seriously, please send it.

There are 2 common ways to load a speaker into a cab: front load or rear load. Without pics or description of your rig I am assuming yours is rear load. Most folks agree that when the speaker is rear loaded and has to push sound through a baffle 2 things happen: it becomes less efficient and the sound is constrained or directed into a forward only disbursement.

Now if the speaker is front loaded, it doesn't pass through a baffle so it goes to the sides more. Probably the best way I've seen this solved is a front loaded cab with the speakers diagonally mounted.

But this always begs the question - are you really sure you want you tone flooding across the stage?

I'd suggest stating who is impacted by the problem - bandmates, audience, etc.

If you have 2 1x12s why not just stack them in a Y pattern?

Wait, are you speakers actually on the floor, MK?

My speakers are almost never less than 3' off the ground at gigs.

Last gig I had my little Pro Jr aimed right at the back of my head. 15 watts at 4, totally clean 1 little 10" inefficient fender speaker and everyone heard me.

Think your setup may be the problem.

Speakers are @ ear level, directly behind me.

Move left or right a few feet and the highs all drop out.

True. But are you just ignoring my plea for the UE700 tech manual and suggestion of front loading speakers?
