Saw this on headline news. Thought it would be a good idea to spread the word as much as possible.

All you have to do is text the word "HAITI" to 90999 and it takes $10.00 out of your cellphone bill and donates to the American Red Cross.

Other than the lag time problem that's a good idea - I've been giving regularly to Doctors Without Borders for years and sent them something within a day or so after the quake - they lost 3 hospitals in the area affected. Just the fact that they HAD 3 hospitals in that downtrodden part of the world tells you just about all you need to know about them.

If you are looking for places to donate, be careful as there are a lot of scams popping up now.

I gave to www.americares.com . 99% of the money goes towards helping. Only 1% goes to management and fund raising. I have been giving to them for a long time.

I have to say that times are very tight for me right now as my business is slow but as bad as it is, it is not nearly as bad as what those poor people are going through. I complain as the bad economy continues hurt my finances but I am sitting here in a comfortable chair, typing on a computer with a full belly and $15K of guitars and equipment surrounding me, while my wife and children are healthy and sleeping in warm beds.

I guess in times like these it really puts perspective on just how much I have and how grateful I am for it.

I think the bottom line is find something trustworthy and give. They need help so desperately.

A close friend is VERY involved with the Red Cross. They get my $$$ and so do Doc's w/o borders.

Both I've been lucky enough to have some inside perspective and both have a large enough infrastructure to do good.

I've watched a few smaller, albeit altruistic, outfits not have their shit together or equipment to do the work they intended.

I believe that several cell providers are sending all or most of the donations instantly without waiting for the bill to be paid - check your provider to see if their one of them. There are also numbers for Americares, Doctors w/o Borders and others too.

This is so incredibly sad. My wife works with a Haitian girl, her facebook status was "thank God most of my family survived" "most . . ." :(
