Difference between Super Reverb & Twin Reverb

I know of someone selling a 74 Fender Super Reverb head, this guy unloaded it from the cab, had it "blackfaced", disconnected the Master volume and added a bassman output tranny (to get 4 ohms).
Is the Super Reverb the same as a Twin sonically speaking?

No, not at all. A twin is clean until it hurts and a super will give up the dirt at around 5-7 on the vol. Regardless, the chopped super sounds like a cool amp.

What does he mean by "blackfaced"?

How was the MV disconnected?

The Bassman OT was smaller than the Twins but nice size for the Super's poweramp.

The poweramp section only pushes out 40w vs Twin's 80.

All that said, it should sound like a nice Fender amp!

Are you sure it's a 74? I have a 74 and have no master volume and thought the MV was added in 75. Mine's blackfaced as well and is tight and super clean all the way up. I love the amp!

Peace,

Gil

I think if you wanted to tap it for a preamp (and run a separate power amp) it would sound quite similar.

The Super Reverb uses a .022uF midrange cap where the Twin uses a .047uF. The Super's .022 gives a bit more upper-bass (lower midrange) making a thicker tone. So it is voiced a bit differently, but really when turning the bass knob down like we do for the Jerry tone, that cap difference is almost totally inaudible. It's only when the bass is set over 5 that you can really hear the added thickness in the voicing and midrange shape.

Thanks for the replies and info, I was relaying what the seller described. I think I'll hold out until I find the real deal...
