JK sounds and plays great, but his tone is curiously lacking high end, doesn't have the typical Jerry sparkle to it. At least on the first night.

I don't listen to DSO, so I don't know if that's normal for him or not, but Weir's guitar is very snappy and full range sounding, but his sounds like the treble's dialed way back. He's loud enough, and all, but not what you expect from the Fender and E-120 combo.

I find it odd that JK sounds better both vocally & instrumentally in DSO than with Furthur.

However Bobby sounds great! Singing his heart out! Phil is back to being GD Phil!!!

Adding JK has helped out those 2 guys at least!

I said the same thing when I heard the recordings. I am wondering if JK went out of his way to step out of the ballpark tonally. His tone sounded very compressed. It was actually more trey like than jerry. It is not his DSO tone.

This is just a total shot in the dark, but I wonder if he was pushing his gear harder than normal as I am sure sharing a stage with Phil and two very heavy drummers was louder than DSO is on stage.

I heard a rumor that John was asked not to sound like Jerry.

He still sounds like Jerry, just Jerry with the bright switch off, or a pillow in front of a JBL.

And that's kind of ridiculous, since Herring played a vintage Strat into a Twin Reverb with The Other Ones and got a pretty convincing 72 Garcia tone out of it.

After 44 years of gigging these guys still need 8 minutes of fiddling around to get ready and play? I guess it is all part of the process required to conjure magic.

ive heard the same rumor and also all johns gear is diff. playin a diff guitar, got rid of his 3 speaker cab, unsure of his amp, but i think they want john to sound like john not jerry, though john is heavily influenced by jerry, he isnt playing as spot on as he does with dso, as in riffing almost identically to jerry on a show to show basis. his singing is more himslef as well

I noticed JK played a different guitar for some songs and his rig was a different.
