Perpare for pure speculation without much fact, as that is all I can offer!! With that caveat in mind...

As I understand it, there was a dispute between Koons and Jerry's kids about who owned the rights. I believe Koons had been running that site to her sole benefit (I could be very wrong about this) and had to stop when legal action began. I believe that there has been a decision that makes for percentages for the various players involved, and perhaps even a joint venture between them. If and when that will lead to a revived site, I don't know.

Yes, I believe they just let Deadnet handle the merchandising now to save costs. Heaven knows Koonz still needs her spa time.

IMO, you cats are off base to be pissed at Koons.

Jerry left it all to her.

I have to disagree there Strum! She fought them the whole way to get what she wanted! It didn't go down at all the way HE wanted it too!

Disagree all you want but did JG write out a proper will with the necessary checks and balances between his personal property, his property via the band, band property, etc, etc?? No, he did not. Most, if not all states, say property (be it a house or guitar) without alternate designation via a valid will go to the living spouse upon death.

Jerry's wishes were left for fate, the fastest hands, lawyers and wrong people cuz he fucked up. It's his fault.

So, this is a good lesson. Especially if you have children, or own real estate, or have a portfolio or 401k, etc., please make sure you have a will done by a good lawyer. They are not all that expensive. The really good part is (apart from saving your family and loved ones from some turmoil) is that having a will helps keep money out of the government's hands, because believe it or not, they usually get more when there is no will.

I've read a number of the Dead related books, and this strikes me as typical Jerry. He was always described as someone who shunned taking a leadership role and avoided confrontation at all costs. That he would do the same on his way out shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

No disrespect to Jer, but I don't think his mental faculties were 100% those last few years(see shitloads of smack). I'd say he was a pushover for a greedy, manipualitive woman. Hey, I could be wrong, Koonz could be an awesome human being, but I doubt it.

Just because Jerry fucked up doesn't heighten my opinion of her.

2 things. The fat-man almost died in the mid-80s. He shoulda known well enough to keep his affairs straight back then when he was clean. But he didn't. He never did. That was him. And the fans and bandmates both back then an now are forced to deal with the consequences.

Koons kept him happy. Say whatever about her but he was happy with her. Without a will stating otherwise she rightfully can state that it is her belief that JG wanted her to be in charge of those things on his behalf. And who knows.... Maybe he did!

Now shunning his kids/friends when scattering his ashes - bitch.

Ok, Fair enough Strumminsix. I still don't have to like her though.

I don't like her either. She fucked with the kids and made decisions on her own that should have been made with the family/loved ones.

Interesting topic. I know a guy who's been dating MG for many years. Carolyn was great and pretty easy going. She always had backstage passes and tickets waiting at every show they played close to Oregon and for years had been after Jer to take care of the debt he owed to her and the kids. Finally, they had a sit down and Jer promised her (and here I'm making up the number as I don't recall exact amounts) $5 million over the next few years. She was ok with it, he was ok with it--no lawyers, no signed contract as Jerry didn't work that way.
Next time the Dead were in town, she goes to the show--no passes, no tix, nothing. It was Jerry's way of cutting the strings. When he died, Deborah reneged on the deal and MG took her to court. It was ugly and MG got a good amount less than was originally bargained. Just an FYI story...
