What kind of mics were they using for vocals all throughout the 80s and 90s?? They all had them, but they just don't look familiar...can't see a brand on them ever, it's always covered by the ring...

I would like to know this as well, and where can you buy those rings that hold the mic? I know they used Sennheisers for a very long time so they might be a version of that or maybe Neuman?

Hmmmm...I'll do some research...let me know if you learn anything also man!

I couldn't help but notice that we are getting traffic from this thread.

They used the Milab LC-25 hand held condenser. I have an old article somewhere where they discuss it.

Sweet Mattias, welcome aboard. Do you sell the shockmounts for the L-25's separately?

The Grateful Dead had a relationship with Milab going back to the 70's using those big VIP-50 mics.

Oddly enough, the two best sounding audience tapes i've heard in the last couple of years were recorded using the VM-44 Link mics. I thought this was a new company until those recordings sent me searching, only to find out they were a very well kept 'secret' on the live recording scene.These stand toe-toe with the more expensive Neumann and Schoeps, and are in the same league as my beloved AKG 480's !

Didn't know there was any connection on the 'inside' to the Dead however.......this board is great, you learn something new with every visit !!

@Dozin: Yes, we still make those shockmounts - called the 3227 - mostly sold together with our studio mics, but they also fit the stage vocal mics. Thanks for the info - I didn't know that the Dead used the VIP.

@Mandoborg: Thank you for those words. Yes, we have sold several VM-44 Links to "tapers". I hope we won't be such a big secret in the future though. We just signed with a new american distributor and will be "re-launched" with new efforts in North America, starting with the AES convention next week. I'll be going there myself.
