I`m diggin it! My question is this. Where in the book of the laws of the universe is it written that one must string a guitar using one set of the same brand and same gauge strings? Except in the wallet. But I see lots of people here springing for all types of high end gear for the quest so I thinking a few extra dollars for such a possibly turn-key step is no concern. My problem was balancing a nice snap on the bass strings with less anemic sound on the highs (I play a Tribute). The solution for me was to mix a brighter string package for the bass and a warmer string package for the high while also increasing the string gauge for both the E strings so that I could really feel it. I`m now using from D`Addario a NW 49,35 and 26, and from Ernie Ball a NW 17,13 and 11. I`m diggin it! If you`re interested and don`t feel like buying 4 sets of strings for one rig, juststrings.com has single strings available for about a buck fifty.

that is a pretty far out thought.. i've never heard of switching up like that... i just use the skinny fats, but then I am not all that great at playn that I need all that extra sound, but thanks for chiming in.. it was a good read and gives one stuff to think about ...

Custom designed string sets are actually pretty common among professional guitarists, especially in the jazz world. Some guys prefer wound thirds, some unwound, some like flatwounds for the 6th and 5th strings only, etc. The only rule to follow is to go with what sounds and feels good to you.

Yep, there's no rule that says you have to use what's in the pack. I've mixed up different strings because of incomplete sets to keep my miscellaneous strings box from overflowing.
