As a guy with a Master's degree in statistics, my first reaction is: "I want to see the underlying data"
That diagram looks like pure bullcrap to me. If the sample size was worth a poo relative to the choices, how come there are no bands that have even one smart person and one average person liking them? Does this mean that ALL of the really high scorers said "Beethoven"? If so, how many respondents does that bubble represent? I'm guessing 3 or less.

As a guy that took ( and passed with an "A" ) statistics in college ( and was smart enough not to pursue it any further lest the GPA quickly sink ), I'd say that yes, you need to look at the underlying data. Seems fihy to me.
On a personal note, I've met many, many deadheads, and for the most part, not a dull tack in the bunch - excepting the ones that just showed up to get as wasted as possible. I think compared to say, your average Ozzy or KISS fan, we're a fairly bright bunch.
That being said, the hands down smartest in a slide-rule in your pocket kind of way crowd I've ever been around at a rock show has always been at a King Crimson concert. Geek rock all the way baby!
