I have heard and remember hearing at the first show the dead played at Meadowlands in NJ, in 1978 with New riders opening with Willie Nelson, I think Sept 1, 78, my 5th show I think, I remember right before Scarlet someone behind me said"oh its gonna be Scarlet 'cause Phil has his fretless bass out" They then played scarlet
So what's with that is that true..did Phil play a fretless bass in the seventies?

Yeah that slide up the the 12 fret and beyond on the low E, sounds like it to me too!

Oh that's definately a fretless there. This was the time period that Phil was Playing G&L basses on and off for a while, and G&L definately made nice fretlesses. I thought I had seen some pics of Phil with a fretless G&L but I can't seem to dig any up ..... anyone?
